Descendants of Samuel Kendall

Generation No. 1

Samuel Kendall was born about 1781 in Lancashire, England, and died in Old Town, Dallas Co., Alabama evidently in late 1848. He married Isabella Robinson about 1798 in England. He married Sarah about 1808 in Newberry Co, South Carolina.

Notes:

Samuel entered the United States at Charleston, South Carolina about 1806. He brought with him his daughter Mary from his marriage to Isabella Robinson in England. It is presumed that Isabella and their son John Robinson Kendall died in England.

Samuel was naturalized in 1811 in Newberry Co., South Carolina*, where he was listed in the 1810 census, p. 118. He married Sarah in about 1808 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He owned property in Dallas County, Alabama and owned slaves. He was found in the 1820 state census in Dallas County, (himself, wife and 5 daughters.) He was in the 1830 Dallas Co. AL census, p. 76 and the 1840 Dallas Co. AL p 64 00110001-0001, 3 slaves, a farmer.

*SOUTH CAROLINA NATURALIZATIONS 1783-1850, compiled by Brent H. Holcomb, [Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore (1985), p 211 re Newberry Co.

"Samuel KENDALL, a native of Lancashire, King. of Great Britain. . .until 5 years past , , [to] Charleston . . .is about 30 yrs old, and previous to his removal from England, had a child Mary about 11 years old . . whom he brought with him.

***Since . . he married Sarah, a native of the state and district aforesaid. . .. , , ,had two children:Isabelle about 2 . . and Elizabeth, about 6 months, . . . 28 March 1811."

Town Creek Baptist Church records in Dallas Co. show most of Samuel Kendall's children: Isabella [McCormick] and husband (rec.1833), Eliza J. and Catherine (1833), Benjamin and Thomas (1841, both excluded in 1843 for not having been baptised),"Permelia, now Grumbles" (1830). Sarah was received 11 July 1820, was named deceased on 12 Jul 1839. Isabella and Daniel were dismissed 10 May 1838, probably when they moved to Butler Co., AL.

Elizabeth (1833) was entered with husband Jesse Grumbles. John Lyon, who provided the above information, found no probate for Samuel in Dallas Co. However, Dallas County deeds suggest that he died between June and December 1849.

In June 1848 Samuel made deed of gift of a slave to Amelia, implying that he was not in good health. Only six months later, Edward Grumbles and Amelia were selling out, seemingly on their way west. Samuel wasn't in the 1850 census.

Children of Samuel Kendall and Isabella Robinson are:

2 i. Joseph Robinson2 Kendall, born 25 May 1800 in probably Liverpool, Lancashire, England; died before 1811 in probably Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

3 ii. Mary Kendall, born 18 May 1799 in probably Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Children of Samuel Kendall and Sarah are:

4 i. Isabella2 Kendall, born 18 October 1808; died 30 May 1866 in Butler Co., Alabama. She married Daniel McCormick 16 August 1827 probably in Dallas Co., Alabama.  Family records indicated they married in 1821, but Isabella would have only been 13 years old in 1821. A one (1) could easily have been mistaken for a seven (7).

+ 5 ii. Elizabeth Kendall, born 24 August 1810 in South Carolina; died 14 April 1897 in Palmyra Lincoln Co., Arkansas.

6 iii. Catharine Kendall, born Abt 1812. She married Byer Jones 18 February 1838 in Dallas Co., Alabama.

Much of the history of Samuel Kendall's arrival in America , naturalization, and the early years of his family's history is provided by John C. Lyon, who is a Grumbles descendant who has studied related Dallas County families extensively.
