What's that gringo doing in the FMLN?

Hi, my name's Mike but my compañeros in El Salvador used to call me Oso, which means Bear. I'm a history teacher in the midwest, and during the summers from 1989-1997 I worked in El Salvador with the FMLN, the rebels, and some of their associated groups. These included COMADRES, the mothers of the disappeared, and ANDES 21 de Junio, the teachers union.
I worked as an advisor, organizer, educator, and propagandist for all of these groups. I also did a lot of educational work in the US for all of them. In 1992 I was a delegate to the first national convention of the FMLN. I'm still a member of the FMLN, as well as the teachers union, and still do talks for them here in the US.
Lately a lot of people have asked me why I got involved in this. Briefly, it brought together several things; my lifelong involvement in human rights, beginning with SNCC in 1963; my service in the U.S.Marines in Vietnam, and what I learned there; and my study of Latin American history, and what I believed about that history.
