WHAT IS A MAILING LIST?
A mailing list is a group of subscribers with a common interest.
You send an e-mail to the mailing list and it is re-sent to all who have signed up.
Once you sign up you will be able to send to the group and will receive all e-mail sent to the group.
Some of our subscribers have been in the hobby for years and know virtually anything there is to know about license plates. Others are just getting started. Although most are located in the United States and Canada, I am happy to say that we have collectors from around the globe.
License plate collectors come from all different walks of life. They include Farmers, Students, Firemen, Policemen, Disc Jockeys, Weathermen, Doctors, Lawyers, and Truck drivers, to name a few. I have yet to meet anyone that has a plate from every year, country and state but I am sure that guy/gal is out there somewhere. Most collectors have some kind of specialty like the relatively new graphic plates or are working on what is called a "run". A run could be all the plates from all 50 (or 48) states for your birth year. It could also be every plate from a particular state/province/country.
Here on plates@listserv.aol.com we trade, sell, and sometimes give away
license plates. We also share information about them. So whatever your
age, level of expertise, vocation, or location you will be welcome in our
group.
There are now two license plate mailing list groups.
- 1 The newest is the YAHOOGROUPS with 300+subscribers.
NOTE: YAHOOGROUPS is web based and easier for newcomers to use and manage.
- 2 The AOL mailing list with 300+ subscribers.
NOTE: AOL mailing list is entirely email based and is for the experienced
user.

The Plates mailing list is something AOL does for us for FREE! Thank you AOL! Membership is NOT limited to AOL subscribers though. Anyone with active an e-mail address can join.
ALL SUBSCRIBERS FOLLOW THESE FEW SIMPLE RULES:
In addition to general common sense netiquite:
1-ENGLISH LANGUAGE LIST. To efficiently communicate with the
majority of our subscribers including the owner, please post in English only.
2-NO SPAM - E-mail (posts) on the subject of License plate
Collecting only. NO virus warnings, mlm offerings, jokes, cookie recipes, stock
market quotes, political satire, chain letters, etc.
3-NO FILE ATTACHMENTS .
4-NO PICTURE ATTACHMENTS ON THE AOL LIST -Ask if someone is interested
in seeing your plate picture and send it directly to their e-mail address.
I suggest putting pictures up on your web site.
5-NO PUBLIC FLAMING OF OTHER MEMBERS - Keep arguments between
yourself and others off the lists.
6-NO EXCESSIVELY LONG POSTS - Posts are limited to 150 lines
or less to stop people from breaking rules #2 and #3.
7-BE HONEST IN YOUR DEALINGS - I can, and will, remove dishonest
people from the lists. Follow the rules of the ALPCA
whether you are a member or not.
8-NO WHINING - I will not get in the middle of arguments between
members. Please only report violations of the above rules to: mikesells@aol.com

9-PLEASE LIMIT YOUR POSTS - If you get no reply from your fellow
subscribers about some plate(s) you have to trade/sell today, there is
little need to send the same message tomorrow. Try again next month.
10- CONSOLIDATE POSTS - Do not send individual posts for each license plate you need or are trading/selling. IE: If you have five plates for sale or trade,they should be in ONE post, not FIVE. AOL Listserv is automatically set to suspend ALL posts to the list upon reaching the 50 per day limit.
HOW DO I GET ON THE AOL LIST?
Remember, You can sign off any time you like.
TO sign on:
Send a NEW e-mail to listserv@listserv.aol.com
Subject- SUBSCRIBE
In the body of the e-mail put SUBSCRIBE PLATES Your Name Here
You will receive an e-mail confirming your request and will need to reply to that e-mail by putting OK in the body of the reply.
: to not change the Subject on the reply e-mail. It contains your confirmation number.
You will be sent a final confirmation e-mail, a welcome e-mail, and all the collectors posts will thereafter be forwarded to you.
Now you can post your e-mail to the list by sending them to: plates@listserv.aol.com
HOW DO I GET OFF THE AOL LIST?
To sign off:
Send an e-mail to: listserv@listserv.aol.com
Subject: SIGNOFF PLATES
Body of e-mail : SIGNOFF PLATES
you will receive a confirmation e-mail just like you did when signing on. Reply to this with OK in the body of the e-mail. that's it!
