MCA ISSUES BORDER CROSSING TIPS

SUBMITTED BY THE MOHAWK COUNCIL OF AKWESASNE - OFFICE OF THE COUNCIL OF CHIEFS

INDIAN TIME - Vol. 23 #14 - Onerahtokha / April 7, 2005 Edition - Page 10

We are experiencing difficulties crossing borders on both sides. Our direction is the current line of questioning is not acceptable and future meetings will be taking place both in Akwesasne and Ottawa with Government and Customs Officials.

We have had initial contact with Customs to clarify procedures. As things become clear, MCA and Customs Officials will be on the Radio on Tetewatharon to include the community in information of what is acceptable.

While this process of dialogue is taking place you may want to follow the suggestions listed below.

PROCEDURE ON GOING THROUGH CUSTOMS

If a person has a problem with any of the Custom officers here are some of the steps that should be taken:

Stay calm, don't lose your temper.

Tell what you have, because if you don't and they search you, they will take non-reported items from you.

If they ask for identification show your driver's license, birth certificate, or status card.

If they want to see your license, show it to them, don't give it to them.

If they persist, ask for the officer's badge number (they are not obligated to release their name to you).

Note the date and time of the incident, and what lane you are in.

Note as much of the incident as you can, this is why it is important for you to be patient and stay calm.

If the officer does not give you the badge number, go inside and ask for the Superintendent on duty and ask him for the officer's badge number.

You can inform the Superintendent of the incident but there is no guarantee he will take the action you might expect.

Get the badge number of the Superintendent as well.

Write a letter of complaint to the "Port Chief" with the Port of Cornwall (Rod Hart).

Drop the original letter off at the Customs with a copy to your District Chief, (the more complaints reported, maybe Ottawa will open their eyes).

If you feel you are being victimized, stay at the Customs and place a call to your District Chief and have him/her meet you at the Port.

For clarification or information regarding this message, please call Chief Florence Phillips or Chief Mike Mitchell at the Mohawk Government Office (613) 575-2348.
