Mind Brain Interaction
"Theory. The deeper reason scientists remain unconvinced of psi is that there is no theory for how psi works. Until psi proponents can elucidate how thoughts generated by neurons in the sender's brain can pass through the skull and into the brain of the receiver, skepticism is the appropriate response, as it was for continental drift sans plate tectonics." - Michael Shermer, Scientific American, "Psychic Drift,", Feb 2003.
The first step in understanding psi is to recognize the scientific proof that the Mind is not the brain. The most rigorous proof of the independent existence of the Mind is Professor Ian Stevenson's reincarnation studies. Clearly, if the Mind survives death and incarnates into a new body, then the Mind cannot be the brain. And we know that the Mind has no interaction via the Electro-Magnetic (EM) force. Thus, it is invisible, intangible and impossible to photograph. All neurological activity comes down to the EM force as shaped by Quantum Mechanics (QM). Explaining psi, comes down to explaining the interaction between brain and Mind, Mind and Mind, and Mind and brain, without using the EM force. Impossible? Not for someone who really understands physics. The first interaction, from brain to Mind uses the de Broglie wave, as does the last interaction, between another Mind and another brain. The connection between two Minds is something new, unknown to physics, which I call the apparitional power.
What is the Mind?
Stevenson has shown that something almost physical survives death, reincarnates, and imposes birthmarks on the new body which relate to events that happened to the old body. For instance, I bear the scars of the bullet wounds that killed me in the American Civil War. So, the Mind is not the brain, nor is it confined to the brain.We could define "the Mind" as that non-physical part of a person which can be seen by HSP. It is a structure of chakras, nadi, and auras. Or, we could define the Mind as that invisible thing which Stevenson has shown survives death and incarnates in a new body, sometimes leaving reincarnation birthmarks on that new body, carrying with it personality, consciousness, and even memory, although the old memories fade as one leaves childhood. It is my hypothesis that these two are the same. However, I must admit that has not been proven.
What is original with my theory? Two things: (1) I explain Mind-brain interaction in terms of the de Broglie wave which lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. (2) I explain the sleep-dynamo in terms of the Mind's ability to effortlessly bend the geodesics of space-time. There is much more to the theory, which may or may not be original with me. Doesn't matter. I stake my claim to fame on these two ideas, which are strongly related to the main ideas of 20th Century physics, Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity.
The Mind is a natural object, like a rock or an electron. It is just like other familiar natural objects (parts of nature) in that it has size, shape, internal structure, mass, conservation of energy, and interactions with ordinary physical objects. It is just that it is invisible and intangible, meaning it can pass freely through physical objects. The reason for the invisibility and intangibility is that the Mind is totally lacking in interactions with the Electro-Magnetic (EM) force. It is also not composed of ordinary matter. But we must go beyond that to explain the details both of ordinary life and of the extraordinary phenomena uncovered by Psychical Research
The Mind / Brain Interaction
The first thing that needs explaining is the information / control interaction between Mind and brain, and for that I make use of de Broglie waves. If you have never heard of de Broglie waves, then you need to study up on "Physics Without Paradox" before going further into the theory.It is by de Broglie radiation that the Mind can see in the dark via HSP, and can focus on successive internal layers of both ordinary physical objects and the more exotic Mindstuff objects, with their chakras, nadi and auras. It is the reception of de Broglie waves from the brain that allows ordinary perception by the Mind. Mindstuff controls the brain by emitting de Broglie waves in a controlled way, to alter the probabilities of physical events. The low level details of this are unconscious.
Dermo-optic perception (seeing with the hands) is de Broglie wave reception, by the aura around the hands. Look in the bibliography for a 1970 book by Ostrander and Schroeder for the evidence pertaining to this paragraph. I make references in this way (Ostrander & Schroeder, 1970). Kirlian photography and the "thoughtography" of Ted Serios (Eisenbud, 1967) are instances of "probability pushing," where the probabilities of an unstable reaction are pushed one way or another, in a patterned fashion, by the emission of de Broglie waves from the aura. The colloidal suspension of silver in film is inherently unstable. We can learn control of de Broglie emission and reception by practice, an hour a day for six months or so. Eastman Kodak has encountered many workers who unconsciously stimulate the photographic response in unexposed film. These workers cannot be allowed to come near film.
What is the relationship between the standing waves of the de Broglie vibration, and the radiating monochromatic waves that are seen by HSP? Here is an analogy. Each note produced by a trumpeter is a standing wave (or resonance) inside the instrument. This note is broadcast at the speed of sound to the ears of the audience. Likewise, a resonance of de Broglie waves is broadcast away at the speed of the de Broglie wave, C**2 / V, to be seen by HSP.
The HSP power can also radiate de Broglie waves, shifting the probabilities of physical events. If the probabilities of two very different physical states are nearly equal, the Mind can learn with practice to tip the balance, one way or the other, to produce the Mind-brain interaction, dermo-optic vision, spoon-bending, rain-making, making cars stop running, thoughtography, spontaneous combustion, healing, and much more, without understanding the low level details.
Conscious and Unconscious Mind Powers
The Mind has two kinds of powers, conscious and unconscious. With the conscious powers, we can develop a high level control by mere practice, without having to understand the underlying details. Conscious powers are further divided into those In-The-Body, like control of the brain, and those which normally only appear Out-Of-The-Body, such as HSP and the apparitional power. Unconscious powers are things like the sleep-dynamo, which uses the slow, labored breathing of sleep to pump energy from the realm of physics to the realm of psychics, i.e., of mental energy. The Yogis even call mental energy "Prana," which also means "breath." We cannot acquire the unconscious powers by mere practice. We are all born with a sleep-dynamo, but a few rare individuals are also born with conscious control over the geodesic bending which causes levitation and apports.
The Prana Pump
The second question of interest to the physicist is "how does the Mind get energy?" As a natural object, it must have some way of absorbing energy. What do we do when we get tired? We sleep, if we can.The function of sleep has always been a mystery to the physiologists, since it does not seem to be particularly restful for the body. What is so special about sleep? Here's a clue. How can we tell when someone is really asleep, and not just lying there quietly with their eyes closed? By their breathing!
The special, slow, laborious breathing of sleep is the physical side of a body-Mind dynamo, which pumps energy into the Mind. The Mind accomplishes this by rhythmically bending the geodesics of space-time to resist the rise and fall of the abdomen and the movement in and out of the diaphragm. Force times distance is energy. The Mind can bend the geodesics of space-time without effort in 3-space, 4-space, or 5-space. The sleep dynamo is not under conscious control.
A dynamo is a general term for generators and alternators and any device which transforms kinetic energy into some other form, such as voltage and current in an electrical wire. All dynamos, including the sleep dynamo, require a force which resists the kinetic energy. Thus, the abdomen is doing work pushing against this resistant force, a force caused by the rhythmic local deformation of the space-time geodesics. The basic equation for any dynamo is E=F*D, which says that the energy output is equal to the force pushed against, times the distance it is pushed. This formula applies to the sleep dynamo quite as much as it applies to the electrical dynamo.
Bending the Geodesics
Bending of geodesics also accounts for the levitation and teleportation phenomena we see in studies of poltergeists, which is also unconscious. It is important to remember that according to my theory, the Mind has the inherent power to bend space-time geodesics effortlessly.Except for a few rare individuals like D. D. Home (a famous psychic of the 19th Century, who once levitated himself out the window of one floor of a hotel and into the window on another floor), bending the geodesics is not under conscious control. And even Home could not explain how he did what he did (Macklin, 1965, p. 19). There have been a number of unconscious levitators, such as a priest who levitated when he conducted Mass.
What is the Mind Made Of?
Our next question is "what is the Mind made of?" Clues come from NDEs, OOBEs and psychometry. In "Future Physics" we saw that Mindstuff might be a particular state of dark matter. Minds themselves create one kind of Mindstuff, which plays a role in psychometry. Sensitives who have it are sometimes used by police in their blue uniforms, which is why it is sometimes called "blue sense."In physics, sufficiently energetic signals can condense as exponentially decaying particles with a certain half-life. The relationship between the energy of the signal "E" and the mass "m" of the particle(s) formed is given by Einstein's famous (E=m*C**2) formula. I apply this same formula to Psi.
Some normally unstable particles of physics are stable within a strong field. For instance, a neutron is stable inside a nucleus, but is unstable outside the nucleus, with a half-life of about fifteen minutes. A Kaon is stable inside a neutron star, but not otherwise. Apparitional signals condense on our possessions as Mindstuff and later decay as apparitional signals. Mindstuff is stable within the aura. Outside the aura it is unstable, with a half-life measured in months.
When we leave possessions behind (no longer in the aura), the Mindstuff begins to decay back into apparitional signals, which a "blue sense" psychic receives. This explains how blue sensitives help in murder investigations, if given objects always worn by the victim and found on the body, such as a ring. Sometimes "Mindstuff" is called "psionic matter." However, this does not mean I accept any of the theories of psionics floating around.
Akashic Records?
But, how do those with "blue sense" find missing persons, especially dead ones? There is pretty good evidence that some sensitives can do this (Macklin, 1965, p. 54) by holding a personal object owned by them. For this reason, I must add the Akashic records to my theory. This is a universal apparitional record of everyone's experience. A person's body image acts as an index to the Akashic records, allowing some "blue sense" sensitives access to all of that person's experience, including past lives, and more relevantly, to events later than any event recorded in the object held. Edgar Cayce always said that he was reading the Akashic records, whenever he did a "life reading."
Weighing the Mind
The Mind has mass, because of the (E=m*C**2) rule, and it should be possible to measure it, by weighing a dying person in a completely enclosed capsule, before and after death. Such experiments were done early in the century, with positive results. Further experiments should be done, with modern standards of rigor.
Precognition and Teleportation
Two of the strangest phenomena in PR are precognition and teleportation. Precognition is learning about something before it happens, and teleportation is the disappearance of an object at one place and time, and its reappearance at another place, without traveling the intermediate space-time. Yet, both are easily explained if the universe is five dimensional. Mindstuff and apparitional signals can move in five dimensions. Physical phenomena are confined to a single 4-dimensional slice of this five dimensional manifold (if time is a dimension).Imagining five dimensions is not easy, so consider this analogy. Suppose we reduce the physical world to a sheet of paper, with width representing space, and length representing time. Physics gives us the laws of this sheet of paper, and everything known to physics is confined to the sheet of paper. Thus, to get from one point in space-time to another, one must traverse all the points in between on the sheet of paper, and we cannot exceed the Einsteinian speed limit, which is the speed of light. But what if we bend the sheet of paper in 3-dimensional space (which represents 5-dimensional space) so that two points separated on the sheet of paper come in contact in 3-dimensions? At that contact point an object could be sent over by levitation, producing teleportation.
Unfortunately, this theory of apportation is untestable. It is also wrong. If there were only one humanoid in the universe doing apports at any given time, it might work. However, there are dozens of species of humanoids visiting us from distant stars, and they apport at will. Furthermore, in the Chinese studies ("Mind-Bending the Space-Time Geodesics"), there are several girls doing apports at roughly the same time, in the same place. With all of them bending space-time at once, there is no telling where anything would go. All we really know is that levitation and apports are associated. People who can do one can often do the other. Both are found in poltergeist phenomena but not associated with other Psi phenomena.
I do have a theory of apports, based on the latest theories of physics, which have to do with supersymmetry, imaginary time, and a fifth dimension. In his new book The Universe in a Nutshell, Stephen Hawking actually draws a picture of the history of the universe as a somewhat lumpy and wrinkled nutshell. P-branes and M-branes can be represented as a surface, and in Hawking's nutshell, the surface is a "brane" of space-time, while the interior of the nutshell represents a fifth spatial dimension. It is my theory that apports take a shortcut through this fifth dimension. In all of the "brane" theories, there are 10 or 11 dimensions, most of the curled up very tightly. In the latest theories, one of these extra dimensions is not curled up, and becomes our fifth dimension of space. See Nutshell.
Time-Travel?
This idea about apports and precognition suggests the possibility of time-travel. Why not apport an object, even a person, to a different time as well as a different place? I have never heard of a single instance of a physical object arriving from the future or the past. As Stephen Hawking says, if time-travel were possible, we would be overrun with tourists from the future.What about those rare reports of people suddenly being transported into the past for a few moments? This is an apparitional experience. They have witnessed an apparition of the past. And what about the future seen by Seers or Prophets? This too is an apparitional experience. Prophets are witnessing an apparitional reality. The apparitional future is the probable future, the expected future, given what has already happened.
Some of what is seen may have a symbolic rather than a literal meaning, and the meaning may be personal rather than objective. Such visions may be warnings, or visions of possibilities, not inevitabilities. The future is never fixed, and is always subject to change, until it actually occurs in physical reality.
Why is time travel NOT possible? Because the physical past and future do not exist. There is only one physical universe, and time is the flow of energy in this universe. Time is motion and change. Despite Einstein's theory of relativity, we are not required to treat time as a space-like dimension, until the universe is scrunched down to Planck lengths (10**(- 43) cm). Then, the Hartle-Hawking proposal (that time becomes a space-like dimension on the imaginary axis) allows us to avoid the singularity, because of quantum uncertainties of space and time. Time could be infinite and unbounded, yet circular, as an imaginary number. Not too many physicists have taken up this theory.
What if a person went back in time and changed history? Impossible. Once a physical time has come and gone, it no longer exists to be changed. Time marches on.
Special Relativity and the Dimension of Time
Doesn't special relativity imply the real existence of time as a dimension? Only if you accept Einstein's operational definition of simultaneity. Operational definitions are one of the unfortunate leftovers of logical positivism, which was a very popular philosophy about the time relativity and quantum mechanics developed. But operational definitions never really work. They don't capture the deep levels of meaning. For instance, it is my thesis that star travel is only made possible by apports over many light-years, which by-passes rather than violates the Einsteinian speed limit, which is C, the velocity of light in a vacuum.Suppose we wish to maintain simultaneity between the earth and a spaceship traveling at speeds approaching C ever closer. We know that our perception of things is going to be different from that of people on the space-ship. For instance, from their point of view, the universe seems to be shrinking and speeding up. Soon they will be able to go from one star to another in just a few minutes. Simultaneously, the rotation of the galaxy will speed up, and they can actually see it rotate. Meanwhile, on Earth, we see clocks on their space-ship slowing down, along with ageing. So eon after eon arises and passes away on earth as the space-ship slowly creeps across the sky. Yet the astronauts do not age. Radioactive elements on their ship do not decay. Their clocks run slower and slower. It is nevertheless possible to maintain simultaneity. All we have to do is occasionally apport to the spaceship and give them the universal standard galactic time.
Of course, universal simultaneity does not by itself deny that time is a dimension. I merely demonstrate that special relativity does not by itself imply that time IS a dimension.
Precognition
How, then do we explain precognition? Some part of the Mind exists in an extended now, and can see the apparitional probable future. It is this unconscious part of the Mind that sometimes sends a reassuring message to another conscious Mind about a tragedy before it occurs, in the typical crisis apparition.
The Apparitional Power
Physics can take us only so far in understanding the Mind. Some of its properties have no analog in physics. One of these is the conscious apparitional sense by which we see beautiful valleys and dead friends and relatives during an NDE (Near Death Experience). Another new property is animacy, also called "free will."Apparitional reality is both perceived and created by the apparitional power. Heavens and hells are such realities, and can be just as real to the apparitional sense as the physical world is to our five senses. In other words they can be solid to the touch, colored, with music, speech, or other sounds, as well as smells and tastes. Because of the variety in NDEs, we must imagine a plurality of heavens and hells. In my father's house, there are many mansions.
The de Broglie Power
The other conscious power of the Mind is the de Broglie power, which enables Mindstuff to see by de Broglie vibrations, with the aura, or with that part of the Mind which interacts with the brain. De Broglie waves can be both perceived and broadcast. The two conscious powers come into use automatically when the Mind is Out-Of-Body. When they occasionally operate while In-The-Body, we have a Psi event."Pushing the probability" of some unstable macro-state is caused by changing the de Broglie vibration, sometimes by the aura of the hands, sometimes by the aura extending outward from the eyes.
Tests of the Theory
Theory is essential to science, which is why Psychical Research is not yet a science. Theories suggest new experiments. Thus, they extend our experience, especially if the experiments are successful. My theory of the Mind as a natural object has testable consequences.The first test is to see if we can observe the warping of space in sync with a sleeper's breathing. The warping may be enough to bend a laser light beam passing over the abdomen to a target miles away, if we examine the target dot under high magnification. Do this experiment successfully, and get a letter published in Nature. A sensitive gravity meter mounted over a sleeping body (but not touching it) may show gravity oscillations in sync with breathing. If either of these experiments work, physicists will be able to produce Psi phenomena on demand.
That would cause an intellectual revolution, with the final defeat of reduction, and the admission into the textbooks and universities of the reproducible facts from Psychical Research.
Powers That Can Be Developed by Exercise
It should be possible to develop de Broglie Psi by exercise and practice. It is not possible to learn to warp space-time, or produce apparitional signals by mere practice. Why not? Apparitional perception is turned off while in-the-body, and happens on an unconscious level in any case. Warping space-time occurs in-the-body, but only in the unconscious mechanism of the sleep dynamo, or the equally unconscious poltergeist phenomenon. On the other hand, we control de Broglie effects all the time, in the Mind-brain interaction, even if we are unaware of the low level details.If we want to unleash our conscious mental powers while still in-the-body, we must learn how to go out-of-body at will, and then, just partially out-of-body, or bilocated, so we can continue to use our physical powers while we develop our mental powers. Joan Grant called this a "level-shift." (Kelsey and Grant, 1967)
Let me describe a device for testing the idea that de Broglie wave effects can be learned just by practice. Build a sparking machine with a cyclic pulse of voltage, much as in a car, in which the humidity and spark gap are controlled, so that one can turn a knob and bring the cathode and anode closer or further apart, or raise and lower the voltage. Provide electronics to tell us what percentage of the cycles produce sparks, averaged over ten cycles or so. Adjust the knob until we are getting fifty percent, so the odds of sparking or not sparking are the same. This is a macrostate which reflects a 50-50 probability on the quantum state level. With an hour or two of practice each day for six months, anyone should be able to push the probabilities to all sparking or no sparking. Once this talent is learned, the practitioner could make engines quit. I base my six months estimate on the time it took Russian children to learn dermo-optic vision (seeing with the hands).
The sparking machine provides the first produce-on-demand Psi control of nature which anyone can learn by simple practice. That should be worth a letter to Nature, too.
With practice we should all be able to learn to do spoon-bending like Uri Geller, especially if we had him as a teacher. All the material properties of spoons or anything else are due to the quantum states of the component atoms and molecules and crystals. Under a microscope, one can see the disorderly collection of crystals that make up a composite material like steel. Somehow, Uri Geller's aura knows how to change this disorder to a more orderly state, a lower energy state, where the crystals can slide past one another and allow the metal to flow like molten glass. I suspect that this is a de Broglie effect, rather than a space-warping effect, since Uri Geller and other spoon-benders have this power under conscious control.
If this theory, or some other, should pass its tests and become well-established as an explanation of psychical phenomena, it would instantly make psychical phenomena intellectually respectable. My theory heals the rift between the physical world and the mental world, since both are parts of nature, subject to the laws of nature. There is nothing supernatural or philosophical about this theory.
