Area Attractions
The best inexpensive outing in the Twin Cities can be found at Como Park, in St.Paul. Start with the Como Zoo and see giraffes, zebras, tigers, lions, bears, seals, primates, buffalo, wolves and more in this pleasant outdoor setting. It's free, but consider leaving a donation. Then head to the Como Park Conservatory and relax among the flowers, ferns and palms, or go for some quiet reflexion in the Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden. Small donations are requested at both. A short walk, or drive will take to the Como Lake and the Como Park Pavilion, which is very pleasant to picnic next to, or tour by foot, or paddle.
Gibbs Farm life from pionner days comes alive at this restored site.
Historic Fort Snelling Visitors view the historic site, high above the cliffs of the Mississippi River and the actors, who portray people who lived at there.
Mall of America Located in Bloomington, just South of Minneapolis, it has the department stores: Sears, Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, every specialty shop you could think of (and a few you couldn't), Planet Hollywood, Rainforest Cafe and other restaurants, LegoLand and Camp Snoopy (America's largest indoor amusement park).
Minneapolis Institute of Art It's web site can give a virtual tour of its collections from India by just typing in the word "India" into its search engine. Be sure to zoom in to take a closer look.
Minnesota Zoo An expensive way for a family to see animals, but worth it, if you spend the entire day seeing the Rainforest, the Northern Trail, the Farm, the dolphin show and bird show.
Science Museum of Minnesota The new building downtown St.Paul contains, among other things, one of the world's only complete triceratops, mummified remains, a reconstructed Hmong house, and an extremely large domed movie theatre
Valley Fair is the biggest outdoor amusement park in Minnesota. The price may seem steep, but once inside, all rides are included in the price. If you have dietary restrictions, consider bringing food, as options are limited.
Area Events
Minnesota Renaissance Festival You won't believe that you're in Shakespeare's England, but you will have a good time at this annual outdoor event. It's expensive, so check Target's "Treatseat" display for discounts.
