Using mIRC from AOL

This document assumes that you are using the Windows 95 version of AOL 3.0 and that you are using mIRC version 4.6 or higher.

Getting ready

First off, if you are not using Windows 95 versions of AOL 3.0, go to Keyword GET95 and get it now! It makes this whole process much easier. Don't forget to install it after downloading.

If you are not sure if you have the Windows 95 version of AOL 3.0, in AOL click on HELP, then "About America Online". If it doesn't say "America Online 3.0 for Windows 95", then you are using a different version. If for some reason you can't upgrade to 3.0 for Win95, you can still use mIRC using the Windows 3.1 version of AOL 3.0.

Downloading and installing

Next, you need mIRC. If don't have it already, you should go to Keyword NET SOFTWARE and download it from there. Downloading from AOL is MUCH faster and more stable then downloading from the Internet. Be sure to take a look around here, the AOL Cyber Jockey team has a great collection of software available.

Installing mIRC is really easy now. Once you download the 'mirc46t.exe' file, you just need to execute the program. It will ask you where you want to install it, and ask you if you want to make backups of your older mIRC files. Both of the defaults for these are fine, unless you want to put mIRC in a different directory.

Connecing to IRC for the first time

Okay, now that you are all installed, it's time to connect! If you are not already connected to AOL, do so now. As soon as you connect, click on START, then "Programs", and then "mIRC 4.6". Select the mIRC icon here and you are on your way.

When the program starts, the Setup screen will appear. Enter your Name, Email address, and a nick name and alternate nick name you would like to use. Nicks are alot like Screen names, but you can change them whenever you'd like. Next, select "EFNET : US, America Online" from the list, and click the "Connect!" button. If you want to use Undernet instead of EFnet, then click on "Add" and in the "Description:" box, enter "Undernet : US, America Online". In the "IRC Server:" box, enter "irc01.irc.aol.com" and finally in the "Group:" box, enter "undernet". Leave everything else blank and click "Add" and then "Connect!".
