"Principe de Asturias"
is the flag ship of the Spanish navy and classified as VSTOL aircraft
carrier. The ship was build by the state owned Bazan (now Izar)
shipyard. Based on "Principe de Asturias" Bazan also
build a small aircraft carrier for the Thai navy. The
construction of an so called strategic projection ship (Buque de
Proyección Estratégica) started May 20, 2005. It will be a
combination of an amphibious assault ship and a VSTOL aircraft
carrier. In the aircraft carrier role it will operate up to 18
fixed wing aircrafts. It is due to be commissioned in 2008.
