SCHOOL INFORMATION

Minute

Schools in Johnson County reflect the area's continuing growth. The county is home to three of the state's six largest districts.

The Shawnee Mission School District has a national reputation for educational excellence that is fostered by the community's dedication to the schools. Shawnee Mission, the largest county with about 32,000 students, is coping with steady enrollment growth in Lenexa and Shawnee. The base amount per pupil for the general fund is $3,626, and the local option budget was allowed to float an additional 25 percent to increase the supplemental general fund. In 1994, Expansion Management magazine listed Shawnee Mission schools 20th among 600 districts rated nationwide on factors such as graduation rate, student-teacher ratio, and test scores.

The Olathe School District is growing even more rapidly. With more than 17,000 students, it is the fourth-largest district in Kansas. The average student-teacher ratio is 17:1. The latest computers and software are found in schools throughout the district. The curriculum is well balanced, emphasizing the basics while also offering a wide variety of learning opportunities, such as foreign languages, programs for the academically gifted, musical instruction in bands and orchestras, and extracurricular activities.

Another rapidly growing public school system is the Blue Valley School District. With nearly 14,000 students, the district has added several school buildings in the recent years. Blue Valley is noted for its libraries, which are literally and figuratively the center of the schools.
