The Island's Magical Horses Directory

Believe it or not, our little Unico is not the only unicorn OR magical horse that exists! Naw. Really, unicorns and other such magical horse-like creatures are scattered throughout cartoons, anime, history, art, movies, even computer games. Here are a few of them.

Please NOTE: some of these descriptions contain spoilers (that is, gives away plot elements and twists of the movie, book or t.v. series being discussed).  Only proceed if you don't care about that kind of thing.

Name: Pegasus/Elios
Source: "Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon" (Sailor Moon). The fourth season, SuperS.
Physical Description: His coat, mane and tail are white (though all can appear to be pale lavender when cast in a shadow). He has bright and alert red eyes that match the red jewel on his forehead. A tall golden horn sits at the top of his head.
Info: Pegasus is not a natural pegasus. He is really a human, a prince from the land of Elysion, (the land of dreams) named Elios/Helios. Elios was turned into a pegasus by an evil being named Neherinia, because she wanted his land and he would not give it to her. The pegasus was caged, but he escaped and hid inside of one little girl's "dream mirror," (the thing in us that lets us have good dreams). The little girl was named ChibiUsa, (Sailor ChibiMoon). Pegasus needed her help, and wanted to help her in her fight with the other Sailor Senshi to defeat Neherinia, who was looking for him.  You can see a picture of ChibiUsa and Pegasus at right.
Magic Powers: He can appear and reappear, and powers up the Sailor Senshi to their super forms.
Loves: ChibiUsa, who loved him in return

Name: the unicorn/the Lady Amalthea
Source: the novel and movie "The Last Unicorn"
Physical Description: (taken from the novel by Peter S. Beagle) "[she was] the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. She did not look anything like a horned horse, as unicorns are often pictured, being smaller and cloven-hoofed, and posessing that oldest, wildest grace.... Her neck was long and slender, making her head seem smaller than it was, and the mane that fell almost to the middle of her back was as soft and dandelion fluff and as fine as cirrus. She had pointed ears and thin legs, with feathers of white hair at the ankles; and the long horn above her eyes shone and shivered with its own seashell light even in the deepest midnight."
Info: The unicorn lives without incident in a peaceful forest until the day she overhears some huntsmen discussing the disappearance of unicorns from the world.  She is further distressed when a passing butterfly tells her that a creature known as the Red Bull is responsible for the capture of her kind -- that she is, in fact, the only one still free.  Determined to save them, the unicorn starts on a journey to King Haggard's castle (where the Red Bull is said to live).  During her quest she meets Schmendrick, (a magician) and Molly Grue, (a scullery maid) -- both become her traveling companions.  At the anticlimax of the story, the Red Bull comes upon the trio and makes an attempt to capture the unicorn.  Schmendrick saves the day, however, by turning her into a human girl.  The Red Bull is fooled and, having no interest in human beings, he beats a hasty retreat.  The trio continues on to Haggard's castle, and there (to conceal her identity) the unicorn takes the name of "Lady Amalthea."
Magic Powers: Unicorns can heal people with their horns. She has appeared in dreams to others, and in her forest can make herself invisible.
Loves: At Haggard's castle, Prince Lir (Haggard's son) falls in love with the Lady Amalthea, and does everything possible to win her affection.  At first, Amalthea (still in a unicorn state of mind) is unable return his feelings.  This changes, however, as she grows more and more human.

Name: Pegasus
Source: The Disney animated feature "Hercules"
Physical Description: Is the classic pegasus -- white and very horse looking, with a short cropped blue mane and blue tail. Long, bird like wings.
Info: Pegasus was Zeus' gift to Hercules when he was born. When Herc was stolen from his cradle and turned into a mortal by the bad guys, Pegasus alerted his parents. Later when Herc decided to persue his quest to become a god once again, his father's spirit sent Pegasus to help him out. The two were instantly best friends.
Magic Powers: Well, like the rest of his kind, he can fly!
Loves: Has a very strong friendship with Herc, but no love life to speak of.
