The Fantastic Adventures of Unico Transcript

Part 2: Unico and Beezle - The Meeting

(The West Wind has just left a sleeping Unico on the shore of the Island of the Devil of Solitude. Some time passes. The mist eventually rolls away and a wave crashes up onto the shore. The water awakens Unico, who is shocked at these new surroundings. Before he can say anything, another wave hits the beach, drenching him completely.)

UNICO: Aaah! Hey! (he dances away from another wave) Stop it!!

(Unico looks out over the rocks he's standing on - the ocean is huge, and violent. He ducks behind a rock for cover.)

UNICO: What happened? Where am I?? (he scampers in another direction and peeks out over a rock) Is anybody here?

(There is no answer.)

UNICO: HEY!!! IS ANYBODY HERE!?!?!?

(There is again no answer, and the rest of the island looks incredibly intimidating. Unico forlornly sits back down.)

UNICO: (eyes tearing up) I'm...LONESOME!! (he throws his head down on his front legs and sobs)

(As Unico cries, more of the mist clears away to reveal a dark and forbidding looking structure in the distance. This cheers Unico up considerably.)

UNICO: Wow!! What's that??

(Tears gone, Unico scampers off towards the structure excitedly. A closer look proves it to be a many-towered castle made of stone.)

UNICO: It's…somebody's house.

(Unico takes a few steps closer, undeterred until he comes face to face with a demonic stone statue.)

UNICO: Aaaahhhh!!! (runs back out of the castle, then takes another quick look) What's that?

(The statue is actually the main entrance to the castle, the demon's open mouth making up the sides of the door. Inside it's dead quiet, save for the sound of water dripping from the ceiling, and the occasional scary noise.)

UNICO: What...what is this place, I wonder?

(He walks in a little further and sees a statue of yet another devil. This one is even scarier looking than the first, and it is also much, much larger than little Unico.)

UNICO: Aaaah!! (jumps behind a fallen pillar) Aaah!

(Surprisingly, this statue can also speak - in a booming voice.)

DEVIL: Who disturbs my solitude?

(Unico pokes his head and front legs up over the pillar. Not only is he no longer frightened, he also seems to be thrilled at this sudden change of events.)

UNICO: Ah! (his little tail wags back and forth in excitement and his eyes glitter happily) Someone is there! Hello, my name is Unico!

DEVIL: Why should I care what your name is? You must leave this place at once!

UNICO: (scampers closer, right up to the statue's feet) Who are you, Mr. Statue??

DEVIL: You dare to call me a statue? Can't you see that I am a devil?

UNICO: Well now that I've found somebody else here… (closes his eyes and tilts his head to the side contentedly) I'm happy!!

DEVIL: Well I'm NOT. Get out of this temple immediately!!

UNICO: Huh? Why do I have to go?

DEVIL: Because I am the Devil of Solitude. That's why.

UNICO: What is solitude?

DEVIL: The state of being all alone.

UNICO: All alone? (he climbs up onto one of the statue's feet) But now that I'm here, we can be friends!

DEVIL: Oh don't be an idiot!! Why would a devil be friends with the likes of you? Go away!!

(The Devil of Solitude begins to shoot pink volts of electricity out of the horn on top of its great stone head. The lightning shoots Unico off of his foot and sends him running for cover, screaming the whole way. Eventually he ends up standing at the base of a crumbling pillar. One of the lightning bolts manages to shock Unico - unfortunately it hits the pillar in the process. The whole thing breaks off and falls down...directly on top of the Devil of Solitude's massive head. The entire statue is smashed.)

UNICO: Oh no! He broke himself into pieces!! (scrambles towards the remains of the Devil of Solitude) Mr. Devil!!

(Unico is stopped in his tracks, however, by a piercing wail coming from the demolished statue. It almost sounds like a child crying. Unico creeps closer and peers inside the rubble. There sits a little blue figure with messy dark hair. His mouth is wide open in a never-ending yowl, displaying tiny fangs.)

UNICO: Who on Earth are you?

(The creature stops his hysterics abruptly and taking notice of Unico dashes inside a hollowed out piece of stone.)

CREATURE: (yells from inside his hiding place) You get out of here! You smashed up my daddy! Get out! (resumes crying)

UNICO: (approaches cautiously) I'm sorry. Do you really live here all by yourself?

(It's at this point that Unico takes notice of long blue thing with a point at the end, sticking out of the creature's hiding place.)

UNICO: What could this be? (grabs it with his teeth)

(Turns out that that's Devil of Solitude Jr.'s tail.)

CREATURE: Let go!! (pulls himself free throws himself into another stack of rubble) You dummy! Don't you realize that devils are very ferocious? And now that my daddy's all smashed up, I'm the next Devil of Solitude! So if you've got that straight you better run away before I get angry! (he points his tail towards the exit)

UNICO: Oh I wish you wouldn't say that. I just want to be friends.

CREATURE: Friends? Hah! Devils don't know the meaning of the word!

UNICO: It's the easiest thing in the world. It means that we talk to each other and play together -

CREATURE: Ha ha ha. Does that mean I can call you bad names and punch you in the snoot?

UNICO: That's not really the idea. (thinks for a moment) I know! If you'll be my friend I'll give you anything you want!

CREATURE: (head pokes up from the rubble) Anything?

UNICO: Anything.

CREATURE: Really and truly?

UNICO: Really and truly.

CREATURE: (jumps up so that he's sitting on the rubble) Really and truly and truly and truly?

UNICO: Yes, just like I said, really and truly and truly and tru - I think I lost count somewhere. (yells in exasperation) Anyway I mean what I say!!

CREATURE: (smirks) Heh heh heh. It's a deal. Okay, what I want is that horn on top of your head.

UNICO: Whaaaat??

CREATURE: (hops down from the rubble and balances on his tail) That way I won't have to wait until I'm grown to get my devil's horn. I can just use yours.

UNICO: It just that…if you take away my horn I'll lose all my powers. (turns away from him and touches his horn sadly)

CREATURE: Go on! (leaps in front of Unico and gets in his face) You expect me to believe that? What did you just finish telling me? That if I became your friend you'd give me anything I wanted, right??

UNICO: (falls over) Please, not my horn!!

CREATURE: (fumes) Grr. I get it now. You never really wanted to be friends. It was all a bunch of hooey! Scram! Yah! (jumps back into rubble and holds hand up into the air) Now you've made me angry!

(Lightning flashes over his head and stretches down towards Unico, who yelps and ducks for cover. But this lightning is a pale imitation of the stuff that had been conjured by the Devil of Solitude himself - eventually it fizzles out into nothing more than a little droplet of brimstone that falls harmlessly to the ground. Unico looks sadly at the rubble, and then lowers his head and walks away.)

CREATURE: (talking to himself, swinging tail back and forth) After all, I'm Beezle, the Devil of Solitude, and Devils of Solitude are supposed to be alone. Naturally. Goes without saying. So what do I want with a friend? Especially some little runt with a horn on his head. I wonder where that little runt went to?

(Beezle pokes his head out from behind the rubble and is given the shock of his life when Unico - who apparently had been listening to him talking to himself - pops up.)

UNICO: Hey! Hi Beezle!

BEEZLE: Argh!! (scrambles for cover, throws his back against a block of stone and pants in exhastion)

UNICO: Why don't you come out and play?

BEEZLE: (comes back out into view and balances effortlessly on his pointed tail) Why should I want to play? I just stuck my head out for a breath of fresh air, you know? (comes closer to Unico) But listen, since you're still here, why don't you give me your horn? I promise you we'll have lots of fun.

(Beezle, now up in Unico's face, grabs his horn and starts to pull on it - hard.)

BEEZLE: Come on, give it here!!

UNICO: Let go!!

(Unico screams with such force that Beezle is knocked back down to the ground. He sits for awhile, stunned, before flashing gold with anger.)

BEEZLE: That does it!! Get out of here!!

(Beezle storms off so quickly that a vapor trail appears in his wake. Unico, alone again, hangs his head down low and walks away sadly.)

(Meanwhile Beezle is sitting on top of a very tall, ancient-looking pillar. His feet hang over the edge.)

BEEZLE: Why should I be lonely? I'm not lonely. I'm not. I'm not!

(He falls back onto the pillar and then flips over onto his stomach. Obviously bored, he starts fiddling with some pebbles, eventually knocking one of them over the edge. After this he sighs unhappily, twirls up into a sitting position, and starts yelling.)

BEEZLE: I don't even like the little runt and I couldn't care less if he never comes back!!

(Cut to Unico, sitting amongst some crumbled stones and looking completely and utterly dejected.)

MONTAGE/SONG: "Lonely"

Lonely all my life,
I've been alone for all my life.
And not until today did I know.

(Beezle is still laying on the pillar, and at the mention of a cloud in the next stanza, a little storm cloud floats over towards him and he twirls it with his foot, then pokes it with his finger until it shoots lightning and rains down on him.)

You set me free,
And you have made me see,
That I don't have to live
With a cloud over me.

(Beezle sends the cloud on its way and then looks over at Unico, who is stilling on the ground, his back away from Beezle.)

You want to be my friend
And I've never had a friend.
You're the first who's ever
Stretched his hand out to me.

But something deep inside
Makes me wanna run and hide.
I guess I'm just the kind
Who can't confide.
Though I try.

(Beezle shakes his head back and forth as if angry for allowing himself to look at Unico, then zooms off again to another pillar, further away, where he balances on his tail and glares.)

There's a part of me
That's saying no.
Telling me to let you go.
U-ni-co.
