The exact date of MLGC inception is no longer known, but the organization started around the spring of 1987. The club was founded by Tom Snyder, Chris Olds and Mike Zajdel soon after the game of Hockisball was developed in Manassas, VA. As the MLGC took it's first steps, the Hockisball rules were slowly evolving and improving to the game it is today. The purpose of the club was to provide an organization to promote new games such as hockisball and existing games which the MLGC would select based upon their appropriateness to the tenets of the organization.

The MLGC has always been a staunch supporter of games of civility and competition. The club has tried to introduce games which require a variety of physical and mental skills, yet are not exclusive in the types of unique talent a player may need to excell in them. It was a goal to promote rare or forgotten gemes to the public and allow a place to play once "upper-class" sports to the common man.

In the summer months of 87, experimentations began on the sport of cricket. This sport is what truly drove the early membership growth of the MLGC. By the end of the MLGC's first summer, the first MLGC Ashes tournament had been held. [Note: The Ashes trophy (made from the MLGC's first homemade bats and wickets) was unfortunately lost with the demise of the original MLGC museum...one of the few scandals to tarnish the history of the club.]

It was in the winter of 87 or spring of 88 when the MLGC had grown enough that it formed a governing body of voting and non-voting members. At this time, the MLGC constitution and rock-scissors-paper democracy were ratified and continue to serve the organization well.

Today, the true banner sport of the MLGC is croquet, with the coveted Stanley Can trophy it's greatest prize. Croquet became an integral part of the MLGC in 1989 with the first Can Tournament in June of that year. As of mid-1999 there has been 16 Stanley Can tournaments.

The membership of the MLGC has grown from the original three founders in Manassas, to over 50 people in several states. The club expects continued growth as the turn of the century approaches, as well as exciting new changes such as new sanctioned sports including Bocce and Frisbee Golf, and the introduction of this electronic source of MLGC events and history.

The MLGC will continue to grow and promote it's values as the years continue. Please point your browser to our page from time to time and see what's happening. And of course, you may contact any of us to get more information about how to become more actively involved in the organization or its sports.
