Ireland, 1953. Desmond Doyle (Pierce Brosnan) is devastated when his wife
abandons their family and leaves him to take care of children Evelyn (9), Maurice
(7) and Dermot (6) on his own. Things are made worse when Charlotte's abrasive
mother reports the abandonment to the authorities. Desmond's unemployment and
the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children, make
it clear to the authorities that his is an untenable situation. Before Desmond
knows what's happening, the Catholic Church and the Irish courts decide that
a 1941 law mandates that the Doyle children be put into Church-run orphanages.
With the help of the feisty barmaid he has befriended, Bernadette Beattie (Julianna
Margulies), her solicitor brother Michael (Stephen Rea), their American lawyer
friend Nick (Aidan Quinn), and his old mentor, Thomas Connolly (Alan Bates),
Desmond goes to battle against Church and State. Hoping to win back his children,
he attempts to do what has never been done before - challenge the constitutionality
of a law before the Irish Supreme Court.
Evelyn tells the story of a father's plight to reunite his family,
the battle to overturn an outdated law, the strength of three young children
and the love that binds a family.
Evelyn was filmed on location in Ireland.
Pierce Brosnan plays Desmond Doyle, the father who fights the Irish government
and the Catholic church to regain custody of his children after his wife leaves

Desmond Doyle.

out of retirement to join Desmond Doyle's legal team as a consultant.
