Chapter Activities

Chapter 790 was formed in January 1983. Sixty three members attended that first meeting and the chapter soon became an Illinois non-profit organization. The chapter is now a mature organization and is still growing. It is an active, friendly group that is family oriented. Monthly meetings feature a multitude of aviation related topics geared towards homebuilders, flying technique, history of aviation and just about any other aviation topic one might conceive. Past programs have included such noted guests as Jim Bede, Harold Holmes, Verne Jobst, Ken Flaglor, Tom Poberezny and Woody Woods. We also have numerous talented members who have shared their aviation experience with the group. We are privileged to have the voluntary expertise of members who are Technical Counselors, homebuilders, mechanics and pilots. Some of the activities and services our members enjoy are:

The chapter is an extension of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The EAA is an international aviation organization dedicated to all aspects of aviation. The EAA is probably best known as the host of the world's largest fly-in convention which takes place in Oshkosh each year. The convention attracts more than 800,000 people and 12,000+ aircraft. During the convention, the Oshkosh airport handles more traffic movements than O'Hare!

The initial reason for forming the EAA was to provide a forum for people wanting to build aircraft at home. Chapter 790 is no different. Members have numerous projects underway. Several RV-6, Kitfox and Lancair projects are in progress. Our chapter is fortunate to have five technical counselors among its members who review construction efforts. Several home workshop visits are conducted each year so members can get an idea of the craftsmanship and level of effort involved.
