In 1991, the EAA Aviation Foundation conducted a survey of long time EAA members to help determine the organization's future priorities. Nearly 92% said the EAA's primary objective should the involvement of more young people in aviation. On May 13, 1992, the Young Eagles Program was announced at a Washington DC news conference. The program took flight during the 1992 EAA Fly-In Convention where Academy Award winning actor and pilot Cliff Robertson served as the program's first honorary chairman. Currently, Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, the first person to break the sound barrier, serves as Honorary Chair.
The mission of the Young Eagles Program is to provide a meaningful flight experience for one million young people by the year 2003 - the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight - and the 50th anniversary of the EAA. Since the program was launched, more than 300,000 young people worldwide have experienced a Young Eagle flight.
Chapter 790 has participated in this program since its inception. Our members have given rides on an individual basis and our chapter has conducted rallies not only to fly more youngsters, but also as an extremely enjoyable group activity. Our last Young Eagle Rally in October 1996, gave rides to 113 young people. Two additional rallies are scheduled for 1997 on September 7 and October 18. The rallies will be held at Lake in the Hills airport (3CK).
