Welcome to my Web Site. On this site you can find my biography, my
areas of expertise as a clinician and soloist, vita, solo tuba recordings
for sale, and my current performing schedule. I especially love to hear
from current and former students and colleagues.
Biography:
Mark Nelson has performed and lectured in a variety of venues. He was a tuba recitalist for the 1992 International Tuba/Euphonium Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, a guest artist and clinician for the Hokkaido Euphonium/Tuba Camp in Sapporo, Japan in 1993, a faculty member at the Summit Brass Institute, and a competition judge for the 1995 ITEC. In addition to his solo appearance with the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra at ITEC 1998 at the University of Minnesota, he served as Head Judge for the Junior Tuba Solo Competition. He also performed at the TubaMania Conference in Sydney, Australia in December 1999 and at the ITEC 2000 Conference at the University of Regina, Canada in June, 2000. He was asked to perform with Symphonia for the Symphonia Fantastique CD recording in the summer of 2001 and was a featured soloist at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in December, 2001. He was also featured as a recitalist at ITEC 2002 in North Carolina and at the Regional ITEC 2003 at the University of Arizona. Nelson was a featured soloist with the Las Vegas Brass Band in June 2005 for the Southwest Regional ITEC at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and also a featured recitalist for the Southwest Regional ITEC at the University of Arizona in April 2007. Nelson has commissioned over two dozen new works for tuba, many featured on his two CD recordings, New England Reveries (Crystal Records CD691) and Aboriginal Voices, available from TAP Music, Bernel Music Ltd., and Walking Frog Records. Nelson has published a dozen tuba/euphonium ensemble arrangements through Cimarron Music and Tuba-Euphonium Press. He has written nearly 200 reviews in the I.T.E.A. Journal, many articles on tuba, technology, World Wide Web, and other topics in the I.T.E.A. Journal, Music Educators Journal, Illinois Music Educator, and Vermont Music Educator News and has been on the editorial staff of the I.T.E.A. Journal since 1985, currently serving as Editor of New Materials. His first book, The Tuba as a Solo Instrument: Composer Biographies, was released by Tuba-Euphonium Press in June 1995. He is also one of the editors of the first edition of The Tuba Source Book.
Mark Nelson's formal education includes the Bachelor of Arts degree,
magna cum laude, from Point Loma
Nazarene University, the Licentiate Performer's Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London, the Master
of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Arizona
State University, and the Master of Education degree in Education Administration
from the University of Vermont.
His principal tuba teachers have been Barton Cummings, Charles Hansen, Raymond
Nutaitis, Roger Bobo, and Daniel Perantoni.
Dr. Nelson is currently Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Director
of Bands at Pima Community College
in Tucson, AZ. He has been an active performer with Symphonia,
the Southwest Brass, and
the Arizona Symphonic Winds. He
currently performs regularly with the Big Band Express on
bass trombone and occasionally with the
Tucson Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Vice President for
Professional Development for the
Arizona Music Educators Association.
Former appointments include Chair of Performing Arts and Director of Orchestras at
Desert Mountain
High School in the Scottsdale School
District, Scottsdale, AZ, Professor of
Music (tenured) and Chair of Academic Studies at Millikin
University in Decatur, Illinois and Associate Professor of Music (tenured) at the University of Vermont simultaneously
performing as Principal Tuba of the Vermont
Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Brass Quintet, and the Vermont Town
Brass. He started his teaching career teaching band and strings for the
Scottsdale Schools from 1982-1984 at Cherokee
School. He was the I.T.E.A.
Secretary from 1995-1997.
