Check out a new Nikon
D1 user review by Mike Chaney. Mike has created a really cool "Hands
On" tour of the D1 that shows some of the most comprehensive illustrations that I
have seen to date. He also compares the D1 to the Olympus C-2500L and gives his
overall impressions of the D1. Mike also gives some tips on locating/buying the
hard-to-find Nikon D1.

Now that Kodak has released version 3.0.8 of the camera firmware and version 5.8.1 of
the host software, I have modified my commentary of the second bullet item below.
Many of the previously unsupported Kodak features described are now supported.
I have posted my initial user review of the
new version 3 firmware and the Kodak DCS-520. Kodak is on the right track with
the new feature additions/enhancements. Hopefully, Kodak will take note of a few
additional suggestions that I have offered.

I have added links to other reviews of the D1. Thank you to the many readers that
have e-mailed this information to us. We are still very interested in hearing from
any D1 users/testers (especially professional) that have experience with the Kodak DCS
Professional cameras. How does the D1 fit into your work flow? Is image
quality acceptable for professional use?

There are now two versions of Mr. Quinn's feature comparison. In this new
revision, I have added commentary to clarify some of the claims. I still feel that
the points made are worth considering before making your final purchase decision.
Also, I have added a new document titled: What Makes a Nikon D1 Superior to a Kodak DCS
520/620. Here, I have highlighted the top ten reasons that the Nikon is a welcomed
addition to the selection of high-end SLR digital cameras.
November 24, 1999
We have received many comments/questions from individuals over the last few months
since the announcement of the D1 as to how Nikon can introduce a high end digital camera
for thousands of dollars less than Kodak. The following information was e-mailed to
us recently and we found it to be interesting enough to post it here for others to
consider.
Wow!! It seems that this piece of information has caused quite a stir in digicam
land! We have received dozens of e-mails on this during the first day alone.
Please note that this piece is more of a Kodak feature advantage summary rather than an
unbiased user review. Also, there is some questions regarding the claimed
limitations of the D1 in comparison to the Kodak Professional DCS Cameras. We are in
the process of validating this information and will post our findings. In the mean
time, we are leaving the original page posted for you to read since we have also received
many reports confirming the stated limitations of the D1.
Folks, this does NOT mean that the Nikon is junk and should not be considered! It
seems to be a feature rich, value packed digital camera that warrants great interest.
It does have an appropriate market. Does it replace the Kodak Professional
Digital cameras? Does it highlight Kodak's offerings as being grossly overpriced?
It would seem not! Different applications require different tools. It
is up to you to determine what features are important to you and make an educated decision
based on facts. Again, do not take the following information as fact, but merely as
points to consider.
Also, we would like to hear from any Nikon D1 users. If you have an
"advantage" summary of the D1's features vs. the Kodak Professional DCS line, by
all means, send it in. So far, the
majority of the D1 users/testers that have responded to this piece have ultimately agreed
that it depicts an accurate description of the D1's controls/features/limitations.

- D1 noise test at

Rob Galbraith has conducted some new testing of the D1 image noise vs. the Kodak DCS
520/620. He identifies a flaw in Kristian Linnemann's test of the same problem and
refines his testing to compensate accordingly. You will find this write up under the
November 30, 1999 section.

Directly Responds to Rob Galbraith's Comments
See Kristian's comments in the December 1st. entry of his News Page. Kristian
maintains that his viewpoint is that of an unbiased end user who happens to own both a
Kodak DCS 620 and a Nikon D1. Kristian is clearly not happy with the overall
performance of his D1, Nikon Denmark's responsiveness, or Rob's testing critique.
