PawSox of the Past

Cards from the Collection of Karen A. Johnson.
Commentary by David Nevard

The set I have is for 1981 – listing the 1980 stats on the back of each player's card. I got the set from "Dave's Sportscards" @ 362 Hope St. In Providence RI about 10 or so years ago. They're listed (on the back of each card) as "1981 Official Minor League Photo Fact Card[s]", and the publishing company includes the following: "write for a free list: TCMA Ltd., P.O. Box #2, Amawalk, NY10501" -- KAJ

Pack 1: Aponte to Dorsey

Luis became a relief pitcher for Boston. When he trotted off the mound after an inning, he would always take his hat off. Apparently where he used to pitch in South America, somebody once stole his hat.

One of the smartest ballplayers the Red Sox ever had, Marty pulled the "hidden ball trick" twice in one season. Could be a big league manager some day, though probably not with the Red Sox organization, since he sued them over his knee injury. Brother Tom was also a PawSox.

Wade was a great hitter in the minor leagues, but he was held back because management (including Joe Morgan?) didn't think he was a good enough fielder to play in the majors. You have to wonder, was there a minor league Margo in Toledo or Columbus?

I think Sam was on the way down when this picture was taken, though he looks optimistic. He was a backup outfielder behind one of the best outfields in history -- Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, & Dwight Evans -- and almost never got to play.

No relation to Tommy, Jim came to the Red Sox from California as part of the Fred Lynn deal. He was not a very good pitcher.
