Links to Interesting and Unique On-line Film Sites

directors

THE PANTHEON Just who are the 25 top directors of all time? Glenn Norton, the creator of this site, knows, and is not afraid to share his opinion, or to solicit yours.

WOODY ALLEN
An attractive site in Polish! also has English translations available, with links to articles. www.woodyallen.com is another handy site, all the way from Iceland.

TEX AVERY
The Tex Avery Tribute has loads of screen shots of Avery's trademark wolves and babes. And you do not need AdultPass to access.

INGMAR BERGMAN
If the Nobel Prize committee decides to extend their literature prize (which has already gone to a playwright) to filmmakers, this is their obvious first choice.  Bergmanorama (formerly The Magic Works of Ingmar Bergman) is a reminder of why.

JOHN CASSAVETES
A comprehensive testament to the fiercely independent filmmaker by scholar Ray Carney.

JOEL AND ETHAN COEN
Among the sites popping up in tribute to the mavericks brothers C are Coenesque and "You Know, For Kids!"

FRANCIS COPPOLA
THE GODFATHER Trilogy, a shrine to the Corleone dynasty.

ROBERT DeNIRO
To find out about Robert DeNiro online you can try -- where else? -- Robert DeNiro Online.

ATOM EGOYAN
The Egoyan Nucleus is a profile of the director of THE SWEET HEREAFTER.

FEDERICO FELLINI
The Fellini Internet Fan Club, because it must!

TERRY GILLIAM
Dreams: The Terry Gilliam Fanzine Pages on virtually every Gilliam work, as well as links to such sites as The BRAZIL F.A.Q. Site. Also visit Hans Ten Cate's The Daily Llama, with Python news.

JEAN-LUC GODARD
The Godard Experience is place to go to for resources on the director, as the man's "official" site, IXVM, is AWOL.

PETER GREENAWAY
Peter Greenaway: The Internet Version, a beautifully designed Belgian site at december.org, featuring notes on the iconoclastic director's films, artwork, music, etc., has been discontinued. (Internet Archive has a graphically-challenged attempt to save it here.) There's also Greenaway Guide by Uwe Hemmen, another dense and comprehensive site.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK
Hitchcock: The Master of Suspense is an intriguing collection of materials relating to the incomparable director.

KRZYSZTOPF KIESLOWSKI
Several sites praise the late creator of DEKALOG and the TROIS COLEURS trilogy. Kino Kieslowski offers articles and pictures;  Krzysztopf Kieslowski and His Films also has notes on the director's long-time collaborators.

STANLEY KUBRICK
The Kubrick Multimedia Guide is a spot-on resource for text, images and audio clips and all other things Kubrickian.

AKIRA KUROSAWA
The Akira Kurosawa Database contains tons of visual materials relating to the Little Emperor's films, such as poster artwork.

DAVID LYNCH
The Universe of David Lynch and The Lynch Link keep the fires burning.

ROSS McELWEE
WGBH created this web site devoted to McElwee's "Frontline" documentary SIX O'CLOCK NEWS. It also contains biographical notes and information on McElwee's other films, including TIME INDEFINITE and the great, great SHERMAN'S MARCH.

MARTIN SCORSESE
Scoresesefilms.com has a "journey" through his career.

MISCELLANEOUS

Magazines (Both On-Line and Dead Trees)

AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER, the house publication of the ASC, puts a key light on DPs.

CINEFEX The premier journal for special effects production in films, television and advertising.

EMPIRE Cheeky British movie mag, with cinema coverage as thick as their weather, as varied as a box of chockies, and as one-upping as their subjects deserve.

FILM COMMENT Published every other month, timeliness is not this intelligent magazine's strongest point, but its thoughtful criticism and coverage of films that more mainstream entertainment mags wouldn't deem to touch is invigorating.

FILM THREAT What can you say about a magazine that calls for the release of a five-hour version of APOCALYSE NOW? "Committed?" Well, the editors of Film Threat haven't been yet, so until they're dragged off, enjoy their writings on the state of the art, the comparative usefulness of film schools, and the "inspirations" of Quentin Tarantino.

FILMMAKER MAGAZINE posts back issues on-line.

INDIEWIRE, a clearing house of information on independent film, including news reports and a forum/messageboard for filmmakers.

VIDEO WATCHDOG Excellent "Making of..." pieces on classic films alternate with reviews for DVDs of obscure Spanish horror flicks from the '70s that maybe six people would actually pay money to own, to in-depth career articles of personalities like the cadaverous character actor whose roles included an assassin in a Hitchcock film, an antennaed alien in the first generation "Star Trek," and a Nazi in a porn film.

Webzines and On-Line Media

AIN'T IT COOL NEWS Harry Knowles of Austin, Texas oversees this cottage industry of film fan geekdom.

THE AMERICAN WIDESCREEN MUSEUM  Respository of information on wide gauge film formats, sound systems and color.

AWARDS HEAVEN  Bookmakers, of a sort, on the annual Academy Awards race, handicapping potential nominees, with an Aussie bias.

INTERNET MOVIE DATABASE / SEARCH PAGE Indispensible.

MOVIE REVIEW QUERY ENGINE  A hub for reviews in on-line newspapers, magazines, fan sites, etc., as well as compilations of critics' "Best of" lists.

THE PALACE  is a treasure trove of film stills, posters and articles on classic Hollywood pictures from the 1920s on, rich with history and exceptionally well designed, with the kind of glamourous portraiture that Hollywood has forgotten how to photograph.

STEVEN HILL'S MOVIE TITLE SCREENS PAGE features more than three thousand screen shots of movie title designs. And if you think that sounds dry, just try browsing without having hours of movie memories well up at the sight of a single frame of film.

Film Music and Composers

FilmScore Monthly is Lukas Kendall's fine selection of articles, reviews, release information and links pertaining to film music, composers and collectors.

JERRY GOLDSMITH
Jerry Goldsmith Online and As Good As Goldsmith are two useful sources for information on the composer's work.

BERNARD HERRMANN
The Bernard Herrmann Web Pages is a well-designed, comprehensive and informative site devoted to who may be the medium's most influential composer, who has at the very least contributed the most famous (and, when you think about it, most appropos) musical cue of the 20th Century: the shrieking violins of PSYCHO.

JOHN WILLIAMS
The John Williams Web Pages is a thorough appreciation of the composer's oeuvre, with the latest news, notes on his film, TV and concert recordings, biographical notes, etc.

Weird Film-ish Stuff

AUTOPOKE Watch Alex poke himself in the eye, over and over and over again. More entertaining than many real films.

THOSE MYSTERIOUS INLAID MESSAGES AT BUSY URBAN INTERSECTIONS For those who have run across (literally) these ominous plaques embedded in road pavement in New York and other cities, there was a Temble University Web page devoted to these mysterious oracles, which has since gone under. But not to worry:  a New York Times article on this same Web Page is still accessible.  It won't exactly explain the mystery behind their origins and occurrences, or reveal who is responsible, but then life without some mystery would be pretty dull.

STICK FIGURE DEATH THEATRE, miniature melodramas that might have taken the wind out of D.W. Griffith's sails -- that is, if the creator of this site had been alive 95 years ago and had access to GIF animation construction software.

SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES  These plucky San Francisco-based anarchists like to see things blow up, blow up reeeeaall good, and aren't adverse to capturing it on film (as in the dark and malevolent short subject "A Bitter Message of Hopeless Grief").

Miscellaneous, Non-Film Stuff

THE GOON SHOW DEPOSITORY  The original Archive in tribute to the BBC's classic radio show (which could justifiably be described as "cinematic wireless") is gone, but this site has extensive listings of scripts and other information. .

KITE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY Some gorgeous shots of landscapes, textures and man-made objects taken from the vantage point of a hovering kite.

THE ARTCHIVE Where you can browse some of the finest non-moving pictures ever created.

STUNNING NASA PICTURES OF BIRTHS OF GALAXIES The NSSDC Photo Gallery, giving ILM a run for their money.
