and Dead Trees)
AMERICAN
CINEMATOGRAPHER, the house publication of the ASC, puts a key light on DPs.
CINEFEX The premier
journal for special effects production in films, television and advertising.
EMPIRE
Cheeky British movie mag, with cinema coverage as thick as their weather,
as varied as a box of chockies, and as one-upping as their subjects deserve.
FILM
COMMENT Published every other month, timeliness is not this intelligent
magazine's strongest point, but its thoughtful criticism and coverage of
films that more mainstream entertainment mags wouldn't deem to touch is
invigorating.
FILM
THREAT What can you say about a magazine that calls for the release
of a five-hour version of APOCALYSE NOW? "Committed?" Well, the editors
of Film Threat haven't been yet, so until they're dragged off, enjoy
their writings on the state of the art, the comparative usefulness of film
schools, and the "inspirations" of Quentin Tarantino.
FILMMAKER
MAGAZINE posts back issues on-line.
INDIEWIRE,
a clearing house of information on independent film, including news reports
and a forum/messageboard for filmmakers.
VIDEO
WATCHDOG Excellent "Making of..." pieces on classic films alternate with reviews for DVDs of obscure Spanish horror flicks from the '70s that maybe six people would
actually pay money to own, to in-depth career articles of personalities
like the cadaverous character actor whose roles included an assassin in
a Hitchcock film, an antennaed alien in the first generation "Star Trek,"
and a Nazi in a porn film.

Weird Film-ish
Stuff
AUTOPOKE Watch Alex poke himself in the eye, over and over and over again. More entertaining than many real films.
STICK
FIGURE DEATH THEATRE, miniature melodramas that might have taken the wind out of D.W. Griffith's sails -- that is, if the creator of this site had been alive 95 years ago and had access to GIF animation construction software.
SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES These plucky San Francisco-based anarchists like to see things blow up, blow up reeeeaall good, and aren't adverse to capturing it on film (as in the dark and malevolent short subject "A Bitter Message of Hopeless Grief").

site at december.org, featuring notes on the iconoclastic director's films,
artwork, music, etc., has been discontinued. (Internet Archive has a graphically-challenged attempt to save it here.) There's also Greenaway Guide by Uwe Hemmen, another dense and comprehensive site.

The Master of Suspense is an intriguing collection of materials
relating to the incomparable director.
Several sites praise the late
creator of DEKALOG and the TROIS COLEURS trilogy. Kino

The
Bernard Herrmann Web Pages is a well-designed, comprehensive and
informative site devoted to who may be the medium's most influential composer,
who has at the very least contributed the most famous (and, when you think
about it, most appropos) musical cue of the 20th Century: the shrieking
violins of PSYCHO.
The
John Williams Web Pages is a thorough appreciation of the composer's

THOSE
MYSTERIOUS INLAID MESSAGES AT BUSY URBAN INTERSECTIONS For those who have run across (literally) these ominous plaques embedded in road pavement in New York and other cities, there was a Temble University Web page devoted to these mysterious oracles, which has since gone under. But not to worry: a New York Times article on this same Web Page is still accessible. It won't exactly explain the mystery behind their origins and occurrences, or reveal who is responsible, but then life without some mystery would be pretty dull.
