LAKE

CANEBRAKE, located six miles west of Hattiesburg, is known for its architectural design and many amenities such as walking trails, swimming, tennis and fishing. A championship 18-hole golf course, designed by Jerry Pate, is ready for play. It was named one of America's best new courses by Golf Digest magazine.

A portion of Canebrake's 350-acre lake, stocked with bass and great for boating, is shown here. The homes across the lake are in one of several clusters of waterfront patio homes, showing the Acadian French design common in this award-winning planned community.

Where does Canebrake get its name? See pictures and explanation further down in this website.

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT HATTIESBURG: WHY WE CHOSE IT FOR RETIREMENT!!

*HATTIESBURG IS AN IDEAL PLACE TO LIVE.

A small-town atmosphere with a larger city's amenities. Excellent restaurants and retail shopping - including one of Mississippi's newest and largest malls(Turtle Creek). There is even a small, but very interesting, zoo to help entertain the grandkids! Some of the friendliest people we ever met. That's what first attracted us to Hattiesburg!

*GREAT LOCATION (NEAR NEW ORLEANS AND THE GULF COAST)

An easy drive for lunch in the French Quarter or a walk on the beach and a turn at the coast casinos--but without the everyday hassles of living there!

*LOW COST OF LIVING.

We paid one-third less for our home than in Atlanta and our taxes (we live in unincorporated Lamar County) are only one-third as much! The cost-of-living is 8 % below the national average.

*MODERATE, 4-SEASON CLIMATE.

OK, it does get a little hot in summer (that's why we have air-conditioning). But we more than make up for it with our mild winters!

*OUTSTANDING MEDICAL AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES.

Two very modern hospitals, 250 doctors and associated clinics. Home of the University of Southern Mississippi (with its very active Institute for Learning in Retirement program for seniors) and William Carey College.

*WIDE RANGE OF CULTURAL ACTIVITIES.

University Symphony(World-famed violinist Itzhak Perlman, singer Ray Charles, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and B.B. King have recently headlined the Symphony's concert series). There is also a Civic Light Opera, and other local theater groups. Plus a constant variety of recitals and theatrical productions from the University's School of Performing Arts and the William Carey College arts program. To further enhance Hattiesburg's cultural offerings, the historic Saenger Theater has recently been restored to its 1920's elegance, including the original pipe organ. The Saenger is now home to many cultural and civic events.

Hattiesburg is blessed with many buildings of historical and architectural significance in its downtown area. Although most major retail moved to malls and newer retail areas some years ago, the beautiful downtown buildings are now being restored and a rebirth of the downtown area is taking place. Restaurants, art galleries and antique shops are appearing, along with the creation of loft apartments, etc. A major boon to this effort is the restoration of the train depot to its former glory. Another project well underway is the extension of the Longleaf Trace bike trail into the downtown area--creating a bike route from the USM campus to the cultural attractions downtown. (see link below for more info)

*EXCELLENT GOLF COURSES AND OTHER RECREATION.

The beautiful Timberton and Shadow Ridge courses are open to the public along with several other local and nearby layouts. Canebrake Country Club and the Hattiesburg Country Club ( former home of PGA events) provide private play. In addition to golf, there is plenty of tennis, hunting and fishing. Canoeing is popular on nearby streams. Longleaf Trace, a 41-mile biking trail, has received national acclaim. PLUS major college sports on the campus of USM. Nebraska, Texas A and M and Army recently visited in football. All the Conference USA teams regularly are on campus for basketball and baseball.

HCC Pictured is the always-tough finishing hole at Hattiesburg Country Club- a challenging 390 yard par 4 with the approach over water to a 3-tier green nearly 40 yards deep.

[POND] Building and maintaining our backyard pond has been fun for us and our grandchildren.

When the children arrive they always run to the pond to feed the Koi and Goldfish.

HOUSEOur home pictured here.

Hattiesburg is located in the heart of Mississippi's Pine Belt.

Large pine trees provide the backdrop for most neighborhoods.
The long growing season makes gardening a year-round activity.

Azalea's and dogwoods are absolutely beautiful in the spring. Camellia's brighten the late fall and winter.

Just what is a "Canebrake"?

[CANE]

Pictured here is one of many large stands (called "brakes") of cane that occur throughout the Canebrake development. The cane(bamboo)grows extremely fast and often reaches a height of 100 feet and 3 to 4 inches in diameter. The brake pictured her is near the golf course pro shop. NOTE: Hurricane Katrina rearranged it a bit after this photo was taken.
