Spring/Summer 2008 Season at the Lyric Hammersmith
This spring, we're delighted to announce a fresh and thrilling international season as we celebrate two of the great radicals of 20th century European theatre, Bertolt Brecht and, in a unique birthday anniversary, Harold Pinter, and team up with today's most pioneering companies and artists from the UK, Zimbabwe, Iceland and the USA. Throughout the programme The Lyric continues to reinvent theatre and explore what the live experience can be.
Season highlights include:
· Lyric Artistic Director David Farr and Zimbabwean actor Lucian Msamati join forces to reinvent Brecht's hilarious and terrifying The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in modern-day Africa
· 50 years to the day after Harold Pinter's masterpiece The Birthday Party premiered at the Lyric, David Farr directs a special fiftieth anniversary production
· After the smash hit success of Metamorphosis, Vesturport's Gísli Örn Gardarsson returns to the Lyric to present Love - a joyous romantic musical set in an old people's home with modern love songs
· A major hit in New York in 2006, The Seven is American writer Will Power and choreographer Bill T Jones' thrilling new version of Aeschylus's The Seven Amongst Thebes set on the gangland streets of a modern city
· Founder member of Shunt, David Rosenberg creates Contains Violence - a unique site-specific performance on the Lyric terrace using breakthrough audio-technology and buildings on the Hammersmith skyline
· In the Studio, multi-media theatre company Lightwork present Sarajevo Story, based on real-life events from the Bosnian war crimes court. DJ and performer Charlie Dark joins forces with B-boy theatre pioneer Benji Reid in Have Box Will Travel and Cartoon de Salvo blend storytelling, script-defying impro and live music to create Hard Hearted Hannah & Other Stories
· Following the launch of last season's Sunday Comedy Nights, Richard Herring returns to host another stellar line-up of stand-up comedians
In this acclaimed, spine-tingling production, Kafka's world of mental aberration and social alienation is conjured with daring aerial physicality, combining a mind-bending, gravity-defying split-level and original score by world-renowned musician and lyricist, Nick Cave and long time collaborator Warren Ellis.
Contains Violence
By David Rosenberg
27 March - 26 April
Press night: Wed 2 April, 8pm
Behind each lit window there will be some tragedies. Most of these we claim no responsibility for, but there are two windows we should not ignore.
Contains Violence is a contemporary Hitchcock-style thriller where events unfold in windows on the Hammersmith skyline, seen and heard from the Lyric terrace.
This unique site-specific performance uses breakthrough audio-technology, through which audience members hear each whisper, secret and threat just as clearly as if they were in the same room. Part mystery, part peepshow, Contains Violence is a dark and surreal snapshot of the secret lives of others.
David is a founder member of Shunt, whose work includes Dance Bear Dance, Tropicana and Amato Saltone.
The Seven
Created by Will Power after Aeschylus
9 April - 3 May
Press night: Wed 16 April, 7.30pm
Cursed by their father, two inseparable brothers are forced to fight for the throne of Thebes. But are they strong enough to avoid bloodshed on the city's streets and to take fate into their own hands?
The Seven was a huge hit at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2006. American spoken word artist Will Power creates a vibrant new version of Aeschylus's The Seven Amongst Thebes - a story of a family at war and the arrival on the streets of gang warfare.
The Seven fuses together rap, 1970's funk, R&B, gospel, the blues and choreography from the legendary Bill T Jones to produce a compelling, high-octane performance that speaks of gang warfare in American cities today.
The 50th Anniversary production of
The Birthday Party
By Harold Pinter
Directed by David Farr
8 - 24 May
Press night: Mon 12 May, 7.30pm
On May 19th 1958 Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith - and received almost universally negative reviews, playing to empty houses for just eight performances. Only one critic, Harold Hobson, praised the piece and celebrated Pinter as a voice for the future.
Fifty years later the play is now regarded as one of the undisputed classics of post-war drama, and Harold Pinter is considered as the world's greatest living playwright, having been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005.
The Lyric celebrates the birthday of The Birthday Party in a new fiftieth anniversary production directed by Artistic Director David Farr, which coincides with the exact dates of the original.
Stanley is lying low at a run-down Guest House on the South Coast, with the slightly unwelcome attentions of his landlady as his only distractions. Then the house receives a visit from two men - Goldberg and McCann - who have come to fetch him back.
Harold Pinter's mastery of quiet menace is already in full evidence in this early masterpiece as The Birthday Party grows in suspense to an ultimately terrifying conclusion.
Love
Written by Vesturport's Gísli Örn Gardarsson and Vikingur Kristjánsson
Adapted by David Farr
Directed by Gísli Örn Gardarsson
28 May - 21 June
Press night: Tues 3rd June, 7.30pm
'It started with a kiss never thought it would come to this '
The team behind the smash hit Metamorphosis return with something very different - a heart-warming romantic musical set in an old people's home. Love celebrates the passion of two elderly people who find love right at the end of their lives, and sing about it!
Neville is 80 and slowly wasting away in an unremarkable care home in a small English town. His life seems to be heading for a predictable end until Margaret is brought into the home by her son for a short stay. Margaret, 78 and terrified of what will happen to her, meets Neville over tea and singing, and their lives change forever. Then Neville suggests they escape for a night out on the town
With tunes from modern pop songs, Love is a joyous and touching summer celebration of the timeless rejuvenating power of romantic passion.
In the Studio
Sarajevo Story
Created by Lightwork
26 Feb - 15 March
Press night: Thurs 28 Feb, 8pm
Barbara is an American judge serving in the Bosnian war crimes court in Sarajevo. Her husband is a London based artist who has recently been commissioned to create a soundscape for the Charles Bridge in Prague. Discovering unheard recordings from the trials he is caught in a moral dilemma that will push the boundaries of their relationship and test the realms of truth and justice.
Based on real life circumstances, Lightwork create a multimedia epic spanning the fault-lines of cultures, international politics and personal histories though video, sound and dance. Sarajevo Story is Lightwork's latest production following the acclaimed Here's What I Did with My Body One Day.
Have Box Will Travel
Written & performed by Charlie Dark
Created by Benji Reid
15 April - 3 May
Press night: Thurs 17 April, 8pm
Charlie Dark's new show is a rites of passage story of a music geek: from a bedroom in South London, round the world, and back again, with life changing tracks and slick direction from B-boy and hip hop theatre pioneer Benji Reid.
A dynamic part of the UK's poetry and performance scene as a writer, producer and DJ, Charlie Dark fuses Hip Hop beats, live on-stage mixing and hilarious stories about growing up as a struggling B-boy.
Hard Hearted Hannah and Other Stories
Created by Cartoon de Salvo
15 May - 7 June
Press night: Tues 20 May, 8pm
Part-gig, part-theatre, and a complete voyage of discovery, Cartoon de Salvo revive the lost art of the 'jug band', using souped-up washboards, guitars, banjos and cider jugs for bass. As audience members choose songs from a playlist, the Salvos will spin a yarn inspired by them. Every performance of this improvised show will be entirely unique.
One of the UK's most exciting theatre companies, Cartoon de Salvo have captivated audiences with their giddying cocktail of storytelling, script-defying impro and live music over the past 8 years. Hard Hearted Hannah and Other Stories is the latest freewheeling antic from the team behind hit comic romance Meat and Two Veg and 2005's outdoor theatre event, The Sunflower Plot.

In 1969 Hall directed a film version and in March of this year Thea Sharrock directed a production for Radio 3 with Harold Pinter as Max. This Almeida production of The Homecoming coincides with a major revival of the play on Broadway.

ANTHONY PAGE TO DIRECT PAUL HILTON, HELEN MCCRORY & MALCOLM SINCLAIR IN IBSENS
R O S M E R S H O L M
Paul Hilton, Helen McCrory and Malcolm Sinclair will lead the cast in Anthony Pages production of Ibsens Rosmersholm at the Almeida running from 15 May 5 July, with press night on 22 May 2008. Rosmersholm is sponsored by Hydro who previously sponsored the Almeida's reopening production of The Lady From The Sea as well as Hedda Gabler in 2005.

Written in 1886, Ibsens play charts the struggle between freedom and the cruelty of conscience in an age of political division. Isolated by their beliefs and afraid of the force of their love Rosmer and Rebeccas journey races them to an astonishing conclusion.
The cast includes Paul Hilton (Rosmer), Helen McCrory (Rebecca West) and Malcolm Sinclair (Kroll).

Starring Connie Fisher and Alistair McGowan
The Menier Chocolate Factory is delighted to announce that Connie Fisher will appear alongside the Olivier-nominated Alistair McGowan in her first full stage role since The Sound of Music.
Theyre Playing Our Song is a semi autobiographical story based on the relationship between composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager. This is its first major London revival since the original West End production in 1980 starring Tom Conti and Gemma Craven.
This warm and witty musical romance stars Connie Fisher. Connie shot to fame as the winner of the TV series How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? And then as the star of the West End hit The Sound of Music. This production marks her return to the London stage.
Also starring is the Olivier-nominated Alistair McGowan whose recent West End appearances include Cabaret, The Mikado and Little Shop of Horrors. Other theatre includes The Government Inspector (Chichester) and Art (West End). He is also well known for his BAFTA award winning TV show The Big Impression (BBC).
Theyre Playing Our Song is the story of Vernon Gersch, a neurotic and successful composer with a host of awards. He is paired up with the lovably eccentric Sonia Walsk a young lyricist who is a hopeless time-keeper and dresses in cast off theatre costumes. The unlikely pairing seems destined to falter before it begins; can Vernons egotistical bachelor lifestyle cope with Sonias ex-boyfriend and her multiple personalities? As their working relationship grows, however, so do their feelings for each other, and romance blossoms.
Director Fiona Laird returns to the Chocolate Factory after the success of The Common Pursuit. Her other credits include Cinderella (Old Vic) and Oh, What a Lovely War! (NT).
Neil Simons writing career spans four decades, three Tony awards (The Odd Couple, Biloxi Blues and Lost in Yonkers), and four Oscar nominations for The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys, The Goodbye Girl and California Suite.
A one time rehearsal pianist on Funny Girl, Marvin Hamlisch is one of only two men
to have been awarded all five of the major awards in American entertainment. A Tony and a Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line, a Grammy and an Oscar for the score for The Way We Were, and an Emmy for Barbra Streisand, The Concert.
Carole Bayer Sager had her first hit as a lyricist with A Groovy Kind of Love in 1965 and has collaborated with Bacharach, Neil Diamond, Bette Midler and Bob Dylan. She co-wrote, with Marvin Hamlisch, the Bond theme Nobody Does It Better, and received an Oscar for Arthurs Theme from the 1982 Dudley Moore film Arthur.
