Street Scene

17 - 22 July

Music by Kurt Weill, Book by Elmer Rice, Lyrics by Langston Hughes

This summer, take in one of the triumphs of the American music theatre.

Street Scene is a musical melting pot of working class New York – scintillating show tunes, operatic arias, jazz, the blues, spirituals.

The first UK production in 20 years features a cast of 15, a chorus of 50, an orchestra of 30 and a dog.

Festa!

Saturday 16 August - 2 performances only

Fun, food and... Festa!

Every year Brazilians come together to celebrate traditional stories of love and desire in festivals of theatre, dance and music.

Featuring a cast of 100 local residents, a carnival of song and dance flows from The Cut into the Young Vic where the myths, heroes and legends of Brazil come to life. Thrilling for all the family. Put Festa! at the top of your summer calendar.

Fragments

27 August - 13 September

by Samuel Beckett, direction Peter Brook

Peter Brook’s joyously received Fragments returns for just 22 performances following a sold out run last year. These sinuous stripped back productions reveal all the angry warmth of this dark, life-celebrating humanist.

'I laughed as I've seldom laughed before' The Times

'A wonderful evening' The Independent

'Samuel Beckett and Peter Brook. Two theatre gurus. It's a compliment to this evening that you soon forget the status of both artists and just enjoy the work.' The Financial Times

In the Red and Brown Water

02 October - 08 November

‘A fresh, absorbing work that is simply spellbinding.’ Variety

Oya is a star athlete. She never feels so right as when she’s running. As a girl she has to choose between following her dream and caring for her sick mother. As a woman she is torn between two men and is desperate to bear a child.

Tarell Alvin McCraney is the ‘explosive new talent’ whose The Brothers Size had audiences on their feet at the Young Vic last year.

There are two brothers Size.

Ogun owns an auto repair shop.

Oshoosi, fresh out of prison, always takes the wrong track.

When his ex-cell mate Elegba gives him a clapped out car, true freedom seems just around the corner...

You Can See the Hills

14 - 18 October

by Matthew Dunster

Sex, fury, sex, violence, sex, chatting back, sex, school, sex, your mum and dad, sex – and a paper round.

Sharp and moving, You Can See the Hills recalls those moments growing up that are unique and universal: a dark moment of rebellion against your mum, the bloodlust of your gang, the summer evening feeling that you’ll live forever.

Writer/director Matthew Dunster’s recent Young Vic productions include the Olivier nominated Love and Money and The Member of the Wedding.

Celebrate Christmas Brazilian style!

Suitable for everyone 7+

Paul Heritage (AfroReggae) directs this year’s Christmas show. Gringo Cardia (Cirque du Soleil) designs, with a cast of English and Brazilian actors led by Brazil’s great comic actor Pedro Cardoso.

Twin boys take refuge in a tree in the rainforest. A spirit casts a spell over all who pass beneath its branches.

Years later, a troupe of dancers rehearse in the forest. Confusion erupts as friends and enemies change bodies, transformed by the enchanted tree. The world looks different through another pair of eyes!
