The Theatre Royal, Brighton is one of the most elegant of playhouses.  Whilst so many of our old theatre have ripped out wooden panels in favour of Formica and replaced chandeliers with florescent lighting, the Theatre Royal skillfully manages to retain its charm and character whilst presenting an eclectic programme of drama, dance, musicals and comedy.  Perfectly situated in the heart of Brighton, opposite the Prince Regent's Royal Pavilion, it is also wonderfully convenient for late night trains (thus easily accessible from London), an array of good restaurants and, if you desire, a thoughtful late night stroll along the beach to savour the evening's theatre fare.

MERCURY THEATRE, COLCHESTER

Mercury Theatre Company Announces Autumn Season

The Mercury Theatre Company has unveiled details of its highly anticipated Autumn 2008 season. From a wicked, political comedy, an admired Dickens classic through to the ever popular Mercury Theatre Company pantomime, Autumn 2008 promises to be one of The Company’s most popular seasons to date.

The season gets under way from Thursday 18 September to Saturday 4 October with an exciting adaptation of the hilarious Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo. Packed with razor sharp quips, this satirical farce cuts to the heart of political corruption and exposes the manipulation of information by the media to tell the story of an Italian anarchist who mysteriously fell to his death from the window of a police station. From the writer behind Men Behaving Badly, Simon Nye’s version of Fo’s great play about police brutality and underground activism in 1970s Italy has been updated and relocated to contemporary Britain. Accidental Death of An Anarchist welcomes back designer Sara Perks (Death of a Salesman, Coriolanus/Julius Caesar, Journey’s End) and introduces Gari Jones (directed at the Royal National Theatre, The Almeida, The Young Vic, Old Vic and in New York and Los Angeles) as a new director to The Company.

Award-winning International Theatre and Opera director Giles Havergal, who spent 33 years as director of the Citizen’s Theatre Glasgow, will direct the Mercury Theatre Company in his own, new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield from Thursday 30 October to Saturday 15 November. Mercury Company favourites Christine Absalom, Miranda Bell, Tony Casement, Roger Delves-Broughton, Gina Isaac, David Tarkenter and Tim Treslove bring to life many of Dickens famous characters including the impecunious Mr Micawber, the good-hearted Peggotty, the ever-so ’umble Uriah Heep to the egotistic and charming Steerforth. Follow young David’s adventures as he grows up and journeys from seaside Yarmouth to London and beyond.

Back for the 10th astounding year and completing the Company season will be the Mercury family panto extravaganza. This year, writer Janice Dunn and designer Sally Howard add a touch of spice to create Dick Whittington (& the pi-Rats of the Caribbean) from Friday 5 December to Saturday 10 January. Follow the adventures of Dick and his cool Jamaican cat as they seek their fortune in London Town, battle the evil pi-Rats on the high seas and win the heart of star-struck Alice! Packed full with all the elements of the traditional Dick Whittington story, the pantomime promises to be the most fantastical version of the popular story ever! Featuring many regular Mercury favourites including Christine Absalom, Tim Treslove and Roger Delves-Broughton.

Tickets for Accidental Death of an Anarchist, David Copperfield and Dick Whittington (& the pi-Rats of the Caribbean) are on sale from Thursday 30 June.

Call the Box Office on 01206 573948 or book on line at www.mercurytheatre.co.uk Why not save money and buy a Company Season Ticket? Book for both Accidental Death of an Anarchist and David Copperfield and save 20% or up to £9.50.

BRISTOL - OLD VIC

Theatre Royal, Bristol

Open from this Christmas

Bristol Old Vic has announced that, having spent the last six months planning both an operational model and developing a capital maintenance and redevelopment plan, the theatre is now in a position to re-activate the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company with the intention of becoming a major creative and collaborative force on the local and national arts scene.

Dick Penny, Executive Chair of the Company, also announced that the search was now on for an Artistic Director to play a lead role in the programme of BOV revival. Depending on the successful applicant’s existing commitments that person could be in post by Christmas.

A three phase programme to develop the theatre Royal complex as an arts resource suitable for the 21st Century will be undertaken.

Phase One will see plans for refurbishment and redevelopment with the concepts being tested throughout the 2009 programme.

Phase Two comprises the company moving to a new home in 2010 to enable contractors to undertake the multi-million pound refurbishment and redevelopment work in the theatre. Work is expected to take about two years with the company remaining active throughout in its temporary home.

Phase Three sees the company return to open and play in the redeveloped complex.

Meanwhile this Christmas the Studio Theatre space will be re-activated with a production of Lizzie Allen’s Home, a new show for everyone from the age of three and above. The Theatre Royal opens with Young Company with Samson and Delilah and then from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Romeo and Juliet.

Eric Sykes appears at the Old Vic in An Audience with Eric Sykes whilst Kneehigh Theatre returns to Bristol as part of their UK tour in a co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic with their production of Don John, not at the Old Vic but at the Bristol Hippodrome to enable all who wish to see it to do so.

Also Bristol based, Mama Mia writer Catherine Johnson has been commissioned to write a new play called Suspension, details of which will be announced later in the year.

All this is possible due to the Arts Council England and Bristol City Council having renewed their funding relationship on the basis of theatre provision as set out in their plans for the future.
