PLOT SYNOPSIS

"Lovely, gifted Irene Foster (Eleanor Powell) comes to the Great White Way hoping that childhood sweetheart-turned-Broadway producer Robert Gordon (Robert Taylor) will recognize her - and her talent. He's too busy sparring with a dirt-dishing gossip columnist (Jack Benny) to notice, but his wisecracking, heart-of-gold secretary (Una Merkel) certainly does. She and Irene must use their wits - and all of Irene's abilities - to show him what he's missing."

NOTES

"Broadway Melody of 1936 was in no way a sequel to the epoch-making The Broadway Melody , and, apart from the similarity of its title and milieu, the only other points it had in common with the earlier film were a marvellous Arthur Freed-Nacio Hern Brown score, its overwhelming entertainment value, and its enormous potency at the box office."
- Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical

"Smash musical with strong dancing and comedy framework."
- Variety
