PLOT SYNOPSIS

"Laurel and Hardy are snatch-purses with an 18th-century band of roving gypsies. In retaliation for the flogging of a fellow-member (Antonio Moreno), caught red-handed in an attempted burglary, the gypsies steal the child of a nobleman and bring her up as one of their own. In the end, the customary tell-tale medallion saves the peeress and restores her to her daddy."

NOTES

"A fair share of laughter and a fair share of the original score guaranteed success at the box-office - the slight tremor audiences experienced on leaving the cinema after each performance being Balfe turning in his grave."
- Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical

"A comedy with little or no comedy. . .There are no credits for screen adaptation. Responsibility is thrown back upon Michael Balfe who wrote the original opera in 1843 and should be permitted to rest in peace. He composed the score; original librettists also not credited - or blamed."
- Variety

This was Thelma Todd's final film.
