Here are some good patrol tips.
Keep a looseleaf binder with all your patrol menus. After each hike make
notes on the menu. Was there enough food? Did it take to long to prepare? Every detail
should be discused. What was good and not so good. These menus can be passed down to
future patrol leaders that could use the book for ideas.
In a survival situation your scout belt can be used to help. The metal
buckle can be used as a emergency signaling mirror. You can also unravel your belt and
create string. The string in turn can be used as fish line, shelter cord, fire starter.
Can you think of any other uses?
A plastic garbage bag is an excellent thing to pack. It's light
weight and has many uses. The obvious is to store garbage, but it can be used to cover
wood or be used as a emergency ground cloth if someone in the patrol forgot. They
can be used as water bags in a pinch and be filled to protect against fire spread. If you
know other uses why don't you E-Mail me so I can share your ideas.
Idea 1 They can be used to cover your pack when it is outside your tent.
2 An emergency poncho when it rains.
There are ways to cook that make clean-up easy. Try
grilling food for a great barbecue taste. Food wrapped in tin foil requires no pots to
clean. If you want to be really fancy you can kabob many different foods on a stick. The
scout handbook has a whole section on cooking with some really great ideas.
When buying meat for dinner a good rule of thumb is a 1/2 pound of meat per
person
When planing your meal don't forget the small items such as; spices,
brillo pad, foil, towel or paper towels for cleanup.
A good tip is to go to a fast food restaurant for salt, pepper and
ketchup etc.. Put together a patrol zip lock bag with these items so they are handy on all
trips.
