One evening in 1991 I was conversing with a friend on the patio of a coffee shop across the street from the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman. The shop is located at an intersection. A boom car slowly turned the corner with its powerful bass speakers thumping obnoxiously and disturbing the tranquility of the evening. The gleeful demonic smile on the face of the vicious punk in the passenger seat made a lasting impression. The twisted pathology of the boom car culture was all too obvious in the joyful satisfaction he experienced by inflicting noise aggression on the innocent coffee-drinkers.

In the fall of 1999, I read a news article in The Daily Oklahoman about a girl who died in an ambulance because it was not able to reach the hospital quickly enough (9/28/99). The driver was delayed by traffic. Paramedic Arnell Dean said he routinely has trouble with drivers getting in his way when he is rushing someone to the hospital. Dean added that today's cars are "almost soundproof with loud stereos."

How many other people have to die before our politicians and law enforcement personnel put an end to the boom car menace?

For readers who might not know, a "boom car" is a vehicle equipped with extra powerful bass speakers which create a booming noise which can rattle windows in people's homes and be heard for more than a block. One may gain an idea of the magnitude of community disturbance which boom cars can inflict by making a rough calculation using the geometric equation for the area of circle (a = 3.1416 x r2). Assuming a one-block radius (r) for projecting the noise and 14 residential lots per city block, a single stationary boom car can be heard by the occupants of about 44 homes in a residential zone. With 2.5 residents per house, before the auto even moves it can disturb 110 people. Bearing these numbers in mind, we can easily see that a single boom car operator driving home after the bars close can potentially disturb the sleep of thousands while also inflicting stress, anger, and elevated blood pressure.

Boom cars are destructive devices intended to do injury to others. This fact is made plain by the advertising messages contained in the examples below this text which were taken from boom car magazines. The boom car culture also promotes hatred of the elderly, misogyny, sexism, and the notion that beautiful women admire boys who inflict their audio terror on others.

Many municipalities have ordinances which prohibit the operation of boom cars, but enforcement efforts are often pathetically weak. Boom car boys have their way in Norman, Oklahoma, and on the University of Oklahoma campus, in spite of the fact that their behavior is prohibited by city ordinance and the OU Student Code. (When you finish this, see my article about noise hell in Norman, Oklahoma.)

Boom Car Equipment Owner's Manual Warns of Hearing Loss

While the aggressive hate-driven boom car boys inflict stress, aggravation, and sleep deprivation on their communities, they are stupidly burning out their own hearing hair cells. Unscrupulous boom car equipment manufacturers, driven by corporate greed, are aware of this and seek to exempt themselves from liability by giving the boom car boys a warning in fine print.

An example is given by the JBL manual which has published this statement in its installations warnings section. (The manual used to be online, but they have taken it down):

Playing loud music in an automobile can permanently damage your hearing, as well as hinder your ability to hear traffic. The maximum volume levels achievable with JBL speakers, combined with high power amplification, may exceed safe levels for extended listening. We recommend using low volume levels when driving. JBL accepts no liability for hearing loss, bodily injury, or property damage as a result of use or misuse of this product.
Scroll down for the obnoxious boom car ads and you will see entirely different messages from the manufacturers encouraging the idea that it's good to be LOUD. Thanks to S. Jon King for calling this manual to my attention.

For the insane "sport" of "decibel drag-racing," entrants must sign a waiver stating that the competitor understands that "exposure to high sound pressure levels may result in temporary or permanent hearing loss." Go here for this one.

Hate Mail from Boom Car Boys

I have received many expressions of support from victims of boom car aggression around the USA. Nonetheless not everyone appreciates this website. In January 2002 a boom car boy became outraged by the discovery of this website and posted its address at a forum for audio addicts. Consequently my mailbox was filled with hateful and obscene messages. Some of the boom car boys who enter their vehicles in bizarre competitions giving prizes for the loudest booms had the mistaken idea that I was trying to outlaw their ridiculous "sport." For the record, it is no concern of mine if a gang of boom car boys gathers in a remote location of a desert for fun and games. The problem is that millions of Americans suffer daily doses of stress and aggravation from that large subset of the boomer population devoted to cruising the public roads inflicting pain with their nuisance machines. This website has been developed as an information resource for my fellow victims of noise abuse. A link to samples of the hate mail appears in the text below the ads.

Boom Car Boy Insults World War II Veterans

One of the samples of hate mail from a boomer contained a graphic which insulted World War II veterans by desecrating a patriotic image from that period. He took a scan of a poster encouraging Americans to follow the rules for ration stamps so there would be enough coffee for the GIs. At the bottom of the poster he inserted an obscene message, the text of which I don't care to repeat. Go here to view this gross insult.

With their hate mail campaign, the boom car boys have revealed their inner nature, under the veil of anonymity, and have provided a window through which we can peer into the collective soul of their sociopathic subculture and observe its rottenness in fine detail.

Hatred and Criminal Schemes Hatch at Boom Car Forums

In addition to a barrage of hostile and vulgar email, boom car boys desiring to crush my right to protest their audio thuggery also expressed their hatred at several online forums. This message, which I found posted at the Canadian Car Audio website, is a sample of hatred and criminal intent toward me:

Sick enough for you? At the same forum, another boom car boy, Desipimp112, wrote: "his computer is going to get a malicious virus shortly." Slingshot2 boasts of giving people headaches and rattling windows:

"My system hits 140's daily without any sound deadening. So all of a sudden because I can give people headaches and rattle thier windows I'm a f*cking monster like Timothy McVeigh? NO Absolutly not...I will not stand for that...I'm gonna give him a lot of spam mail because I get tons of it...especially Porn mail....I hope he's gonna get really pissed."

At another boom car boy forum I found these comments, made in anger against this website:

"We all need to stand up amd be LOUDER than these fools or they may take away out rights to do as we wish in this free contry [sic] of ours "

"I think he'd like to hear what we have to say....or do..... "

A ridiculous perversion of the idea of free speech:

"Not to meantion [sic] a loud stereo could be argued as a form of speech, protected by the 1st amendment. "

"People have a right to have that stuff in their vehicles and play as loud as they want. "

A common boom car boy's criminal fantasy about me:

"I am going to find out where he lives, install about 3 more subs, crank er up full notch, lock my car and run away behind a bush."

"I'm going to kill people with my sub... especially my neighbors and any person that is near my car... I want to kill them all.... I've never even heard the term "Boom Car" before"

Proud to Make Windows Rattle

Writing for the City Journal, Brian Anderson reports a boom car boy's statement that he is "proudly one of the people who enjoy making your windows rattle." He added, "It's kind of a power thing." Another boom car boy further enlightens us about their destructive intentions with these comments: “My music is always loud but goes louder at intersections or parking lots where a lot of other people can hear the music. I guess the louder the system you have, the more bragging rights you can have.” (At the City Journal website, scroll down to Drive-by Noise Assaults).

Boomer Discusses Motives in Email

A 20-year-old who admits to having been a boom car boy in high school sent me an email in which he discussed his motives. He wrote:

I would drive in the high school parking lot in the morning and leaving school with my stereo about as loud as it would go and the base turned up with a tape of a good song on. Why? Because I wanted people to see me in my car and listening to a cool song. Basically I wanted to fit in. I thought if people saw me in my car listening to music they thought was cool, it would in turn make me more cool, at least to the other students. I have to say in hindsight, that it probably did. People like people with cool cars and who listen to cool music. -Specially in high school.

He still likes to play his car stereo at high volumes, and admits it's a way of attracting attention to the vehicle, so he can then brag about its "leather seats, power everything, heads up display, compass, Supercharged 3.8 liter V6 engine, and all that stuff. " Go here for his complete text.

It's not just about noise, readers. A large part of the problem is our society's decay into a culture of device worship.

Litigation and More Vigorous Law Enforcement Efforts Are Needed

I am asking my fellow citizens to contact their legislators and states' attorneys general and ask for a public interest lawsuit against the boom car industry. Litigation has already proceeded against tobacco companies and gun manufacturers, even though these industries, in contrast to the boom car equipment marketers, would never advertise that their products should be used to inflict injury on others. Additionally, contact your local office of Legal Aid (Legal Services Corporation). I also recommend trying to mobilize the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). I hear they are an effective lobbying organization.

In 2001, a bill for a state law to ban boom cars in Nevada was vetoed by the Governor. Boom car defenders, playing the race card, argued that the law would be used to "harass" minority youth. This is rubbish. People stopped by police under this law would be calling attention to themselves with their illegal behavior, not their race. Further, as you will see from the ads, the boom car marketers primarily target white boys.

The notion that those of us who desire peace and quiet in our homes would tolerate enforcement against minorities only and leniency toward white offenders is absolutely ludicrous. What do they think we do when we're blasted out of our sleep at 3:00 AM by one of these noise thugs? They seem to believe that our response to this experience is to get out of bed, put on our clothes, rush outside, and say "Oh, it's OK -- just a white boy having fun."

How many poor elderly black people have to suffer stress and sleep deprivation caused by boom car boys? Do the bleeding hearts care about the boom car boys' victims?

And please, don't let anyone tell you that boom car boys deserve protection under the principle of "free expression." Free expression means that the government should not interfere in the communication between a speaker or performer and his willing audience. It does not mean that any jerk with a powerful amplifier should be able to force people to hear trash noise we don't want to hear. That is not free expression. It is audio violence and noise trespass.

Be sure to see my article about the public health and safety hazards of boom cars at this website. The article argues for a public interest lawsuit against the boom car industry.

Exhibit One

More than anything else, this ad makes the case for a lawsuit against the boom car industry. The headline boasts "Research shows excessively loud car stereos are the number one annoyance to people over 40." The ad, from Prestige Audio, appeared in the October 1997 issue of Car Stereo Review and several other magazines. The second scan is enlarged text which boasts that the "120 watt amp will put the over 40 set into cardiac arrest." Charming, no?

Exhibit Two

Exhibit Two is from Jensen, which trumpets the slogan "Whattayadeaf?" This is meant to ridicule older people expected to ask such a question as they protest the annoying noise. The ad conveys the idea that the Jensen equipment can inflict an earthquake on San Francisco while adoring women, shaking from the thunderous vibrations, express their approval, even while experiencing internal organ damage from the concussion wave created by the boom car.

["IMAGE"]<br

Exhibit Three

Exhibit Three wins the contest for being the most sexist of the boom car ads. Enough said. It speaks for itself. It was published in the September 1999 Car Stereo Review.

["IMAGE"]<br

Exhibit Four

Exhibit Four is meant to tell guys that they can be as ugly as your worst nightmare and still attract beautiful women if they have a loud enough boom car. Observe the slogan "Disturb the Peace" in the lower right corner. This was in the September 1999 Car Stereo Review.

["IMAGE"]

Exhibit Five

Once again, the sexist content of this ad from Alpine speaks loudly for itself. Note the headline's reference to a "fully functioning bottom end," which "is useless if it's soft and flabby." It is from the July 1999 issue of Car Stereo.

["IMAGE"]

Exhibit Six

All decent people should be infuriated by Exhibit Six. Here we see an affluent arrogant privileged young jerk using his boom car to inflict damage on a wage-earner driving a truck. The ad boosts of "awesome power" with the implicit message that this power can be used to oppress those contemptible working people. This Pioneer ad appeared in the September 1999 issue of Car Stereo Review.

["IMAGE"]

Exhibit Seven

This one leaves the power-hungry boom car boys with the impression that they will be able to destroy homes with the advertized equipment. This was in the September 1999 Car Stereo Review.

["IMAGE"]

Exhibit Eight

This ad appeared in the July 1999 issue of Car Stereo and displays the sexist themes repeatedly expressed on CD covers marketed to boom car boys.

Vieques, Vibroacoustic Disease, and Boom Cars

In June 2001 the White House announced that the naval bombing training on Vieques, Puerto Rico, will be halted by 2003. Many concerns have been raised about the damage being done to local residents by this military exercise. Puerto Rican medical researcher Nuno Castelo Branco believes that the booms caused by the navy are inflicting vibroacoustic disease. A Puerto Rico study released in January 2001 and conducted by doctors from the Ponce School of Medicine found 49 of 50 volunteers tested on Vieques had a thickening of the sac surrounding the heart, a symptom of this illness.

Powerful concussion waves result from the booms created by these bombs. Getting close to home, a good illustration is offered by the 1995 terrorist bombing in Oklahoma City. The blast created a cone-shaped concussion wave which reduced about half of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building to rubble. (The huge sound created by the falling debris accounts for the "second explosion" which conspiracists believe was the result of an "inside job.") The blast from the explosion also blew out windows 20 blocks away.

Here in the continental USA, boom cars are doing exactly the same thing the Navy is doing at Vieques: killing people slowly with high-decibel, low frequency noise assaults. Meanwhile, University administrators such as OU's David Boren and city officials in places like Norman, Oklahoma, look on indifferently. The boom car boys, equipped by the profit-hungry noise industry, have been running a bombing campaign all over the country and getting away with it. Every boom car boy is nothing more than a scaled-down Timothy McVeigh. Individually, their instruments are not as powerful as McVeigh's, but their sociopathic hatred for society matches that of the man who carried out the worst terrorist act ever conducted on American soil before the WTC attack.

The combined destructive power of the many thousands of boom cars blasting their way across America cities is far greater than the power of McVeigh's bomb. In the long run, unless these monsters are controlled, the number of victims killed slowly by the effects of sleep deprivation, stress, and vibroacoustic illness will far exceed 168. In boom car land, it's Oklahoma City every day.

Go here for the American Nurses Association's resolution recognizing the problem of vibroacoustic illness on Vieques island.

Regarding vibroacoustic disease, see also these articles by Portuguese medical researcher Nuno Castelo Branco and psychologist Bart Billings ("Feeling the Music Can Be Dangerous to your Health").

The Boom Car Subculture as a Marker for Declining Western Civilization

The emergence of boom car audio violence on our urban landscapes represents more than a problem of noise. It is part of the accelerating trend toward worship of devices, and it is a new kind of crime with different and more perverse motives than have been known before.

Boom car audio aggression is, first of all, a crime of violence. The pounding thumps they produce, rattling our windows and sending vibrations which can be felt, is a deliberate audio assault. What's emphasized here is that it is a different kind of violent crime unlike Americans have ever known before.

We are familiar with crimes involving violence or the threat of it with economic motives. Robbery and mugging are two common examples. We are familiar with crimes of passion such as domestic violence and rape. Here the victim is a specific individual the perpetrator wishes to violate in association with a grudge or a controlling desire.

We are familiar with urban delinquent gangs of the past. Their membership rituals often involved theft. Violence in some cases was specifically targeted against other gangs in wars over control of "turf."

The boom car boy, in contrast, is an entirely new species of criminal. His equipment is expensive, and his origins are often advantaged. He joyfully conducts his violence against anonymous members of his commmunity with no motive of economic gain and no specific vendetta against any particular individuals. The boom car boy has no reason for inflicting injury other than the pleasure of doing so, and, as we have seen by the hate mail campaign they have conducted against me, will stop at nothing to silence those who protest this madness. On the new continuum of aggressive behavior, he is but one step away from the high school killers who emerged on the American scene in the 90s with their acts of random violence.

Perhaps more than anything else, the presence of the boom car industry and supporting subculture is a powerful indicator of Western civilization's advanced state of cultural decline. Here we have an industry whose promoters openly and triumphantly proclaim that its products can be used to injure others and inflict damage. This is a selling point. Their ads degrade women with the notion that they will adore adolescent boys who take pleasure in aggression.

The language of noise control ordinances in many cities prohibits the operation of these devices, yet the industry thrives, and every day millions suffer from it. The boom car industry makes a mockery of America's ideals of justice. The criminals go about their work without the restraint of law enforcement, and the victims suffer. This state of affairs exists because the criminals are supported by a powerful profiteering corporations and indifferent law enforcement personnel.

All Americans, regardless of political ideology, have a basic interest in health, uninterrupted sleep, and tranquility in our homes. A small minority, the boom car boys and loud exhaust system noise-makers, are depriving us of that. It is up to the victims to demand that our right to quiet be respected.

See this related essay, "Media Violence, Noise Pollution, and Gunfire."

Another interesting essay appears in the journal Foreign Policy. The author argues that the century of American world domination is over. Like ancient Rome, as our empire fades our culture has declined right along with it.

Boom Car Boy Slogan Shows Hatred of Elderly

More evidence of hatred of the elderly and the pleasure boom car boys take by inflicting pain, stress, and annoyance on their victims is found in this slogan I discovered at one of their websites: "If it's too loud, you're 2old."

At a different page, the same website makes these comments about noise-making equipment from Boston Acoustics:

""These things hit with enough power and accuracy to give you a concussion."

"...the highs can make your ears bleed."

Boom Car Ad: "Shake Sheets and Annoy Neighbors"

Hollywood Sound Labs boasts that its equipment is designed to "shake sheets and annoy neighbors." Their online ad text says:

To sum it up, this is not the sub that your neighbors would pick. They'd prefer that you just turn the page and stick with those ratty OEM 5x7s, thank you very much. So we should all just follow their advice (wink, wink) because I know that none of you guys out there would want to (nudge, nudge) annoy anyone. OOOOWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Does the above message have anything to say about the decline of our culture? Remember an earlier time when the idea was to be friends with your neighbors? Now, powerful corporate enterprises are spreading the message that it's cool to annoy your neighbors.

Where is humanity going? In the early days of homo sapiens, before language and society were developed, our ancestors were pack animals. We have social instincts, but our corporate enterprises are now leading us down the path of war of all against all. The younger generation is being taught to value their devices more than their relationships to other humans. Worse yet, they are being taught to define their self worth in terms of the degree to which they can use their devices to inflict pain and suffering on others.

In the long run, undermining our own natural instincts for community life will not be healthy for any of us -- not even for the boom car boys who currently feel so empowered by their ability to dominate, harass, and injure others for the pleasure of it.

The defense of our right to quiet is inextricably bound to the defense of civilization.

Lethal Sound and Vicious Pranks with the "Burp Button"

In an online article, boom car lover Jack Boulware writes about pain and death, subjects which fascinate audio thugs:

The sound threshold for pain is 125 decibels. A rock concert maxes out at 130 decibels. The roar of a jet aircraft, one of the loudest sounds in the everyday world, measures about 150. If you walked up to a 747 at maximum thrust and stuck your head inside an engine, the noise would blast through your eardrums and fry the tiny cilia lining your auditory canal. You'd go deaf in an instant, but that would be the least of it - the force of the sound waves would liquefy your bowels, and you would die in a puddle of your own diarrhea.
In the very next paragraph he expresses admiration for "the beast," a super boom car which is eight times louder than the 747. He adds: "this is not the typical bass-booming joyrider that cruises America's streets, collecting noise-pollution tickets and annoying people at stoplights." Boulware goes on to report that in recent years "a peculiar new car culture has sprung up whose acolytes live to produce extreme levels of noise that seem almost insane."

I would add that it isn't just "insane." It's destructive, violent, and aggressive, and the members of this "peculiar new car culture" measure their success by their ability to inflict others with injury.

Boulware describes a Florida competition where prizes are awarded to the loudest boom cars. One of the contestants is a Dade County police detective. I am reminded of the Latin proverb: Quis custos custodiat? This is an outrage. Cops should not be supporting the nuisance noise industry.

Boulware describes riding in a boom car in West Palm Beach, while listening to violent rapper Eminem. He reports what happens after the "burp button" is activated:

The noise sounds like "BRRROONNNNKKKKK!" The vehicle vibrates like a jackhammer, but much lower and deeper. I feel air blowing the back of my hair, and my body starts to rise out of the seat. My pant legs are flapping. Everything in the car is rattling like crazy, and I realize my vision is blurred as my face pulls back taut against my skull. The only reaction left is to laugh out loud. I look over at Billy E gripping the steering wheel, squinting and grinning maniacally. He lets up on the button, and the chaos stops.

Earlier, Boulware reported that 150 decibels can kill people at close range. Now he boasts of "strafing the streets with 150-decibel blasts" in order to trigger car alarms and ruin the experience for people attempting to enjoy West Palm Beach restaurants:

And they all have car alarms. Which is why we're here. Billy E puts a CD in the changer, slows down, and glides past an upscale oyster bar. He hits the burp button. BRRROONNNNKKKKK! Pedestrians and parking valets look up at the noise. We wait a moment, and then hear the distinctive yelp of a Viper car alarm. He smiles.

We crisscross the area, strafing the streets with 150-decibel blasts, triggering two or three car alarms per block. The variety of warning sounds is amazing. Some car alarms make a chirping noise, others wail; occasionally headlights will flash.

"There's a lot of cops out tonight," Billy E says. "That's about all we want to do with that." As we speed away from the carnage, the cacophony of alarms gradually recedes. They sound like the cries of wounded animals.

For a final outrage, he claims that boom car blasts can cause women to have spontaneous orgasms, and that this has been scientifically tested.

Evidence of Audio Stimulus Dependency Disorder: Hostile Mail from Boom Car Boys

On e-mail discussion lists devoted to noise pollution problems I have proposed that mental health professionals should recognize a syndrome for which I suggest the label Audio Stimulus Dependency Disorder. There are many people in our society who appear to be uncomfortable with quiet. A frequent user of the University of Oklahoma Library, I often see students studying for exams with stereo earphones providing them a continuing noise stimulus. Some have even admitted to me that they cannot study without this stimulus.

In his article referenced above, psychologist Bart Billings discusses the hormonal response which sometimes occurs in reaction to pain. The release of adrenaline and endorphin causes a person to feel "high" following a painful stimulus. I suggest that those who invest heavily in audio equipment to provide this kind of experience are also afflicted with Audio Stimulus Dependency Disorder.

In a hostile email I received from a boom car boy, he wrote: "Intense loud bass vibrates your entire body, and gives you a strange, but enjoyable experience. That is why people create boom cars."

The boom car boy appears to have posted my website address at a forum. Not long after his email arrived, my mailbox began to suffer an invasion by a swarm of hostile mails from boomers. I believe the data they provided make for a very useful illustration of the pathology and hatefulness of the boom car culture. For that reason I have posted some of this correspondence.

YAHOO Discussion Lists for Boom Car Boys

A brief survey of YAHOO message boards for boom car boys indicates their pride in their ability to make noise with the loud thumping bass. Below are a few titles they have given to their boards. Much of the language incorporates the idea of audio violence. The first one also betrays their problem of semi-literacy. Note also the fascination they display for madness and psychopathology, along with criminality, as shown by their references to the "Mafia":

Boom Car Store Named "Toys With Noise"

Boom car equipment marketers, like people who used to blow smoke in our faces on elevators before society put restrictions on tobacco use, have taken pride in the fact that making noise is what they're all about. An illustration is provided by the Toys with Noise boom car store in Edmond, Oklahoma. The store has boasted of being "home of the loudest car in the world."

At a boom car competition website, Toys With Noise invited viewers to see them "destroy a windshield." This website has disappeared in the time since I discovered it and linked to it. Maybe the scum in this business are getting to be ashamed to show their faces.
