Project "Black Fire"

Creating a Superclean Competition & styled '86 MR2

Side view of Black '86 MR2

This is my latest edition to my MR2 collection. This was sitting up for sale for the LONGEST time! The previous owner was buying a house and really needed to sell it, so I picked it up for a $1k. Sooo, lets look it over shall we? The car was professionally & meticulously painted with all the pieces off the car! The paint is custom containing a deep Black w/Red flake. The flake isn't obvious, as it looks perfectly midnight black until you shine a light on it!! Thus the name Black Fire. The interior is beautifull with a racy Red/Black combination with the doors & shift boot leathered red. In keeping with this theme, the plastic pieces in the trunk are also a matching red. Everything is there and again in mint condition...EVEN the radiator is painted red. Next, if it's not red or black its CHROME. All latching hardware is chromed down to the trunk holder poles. This continues with the engine, which looks better than it runs unfortunetly. The Valve covers, throttle linkage, engine brackets, etc.. are all nicely chromed. This engine has all the components that properly guide, hook, & clamp everything perfectly in place as if it just came off the floor. Various other parts where chromed, painted red, etc some in good taste....others in not so good taste. Still it lookes AWESOME. The rear trunk has nice steam cleaned carpet, with a custom carpeted container area, that used to house the car's high power amp, which could be seen through plexiglass. Additionally, very hard to see in the pictures are the carbon fiber racing stripes, that are nicely done going at an angle accross the hood and down the passenger door.

I have NEVER seen a MKI in as good condition as this one. The only area that needs work is the engine's mechanical condition...yes it may be superclean, but it has super problems. The Wiring harness had some opened wires, obviously from stereo install, which had to be repaired. Then it has a smoking problem from low compression. SOOO the next step, keeping with an almost stock motor setup, we will build up an overbored 0.50mm short block. This will be accompanied by a 3angle valve job, port and polished head, with new seals and hoses all around. Not to forget a performance exhaust too!!
After the motor work is completed we need to enhance the look a little more. First up, put a red/black MOMO steering wheel back on it (the original owner showed this to us, but kept it). Then we need some 16" rims, tokico shocks and some sustec springs. After this there will be little more to do but SHOW IT OFF. Off to competition we'll go...happy as can be and lookin' sweet!

In the FUTURE:

After a while Project "I'm Blue"'s racing engine will go into this one, while the Blue MKI will be changed to a full, all out racer with 3S-GTE engine and roll cage. The blue MKI will then be painted yellow...thus it's project name will then become "Yellow fury."

Project Status

As of July: We've fixed it's wiring harness, and began ordering the parts to rebuild and overbore it's block so stay tuned...

The Project Pics

Here are some great pics of this car...but you'd really have to see it in person!! (Note: the camera had a spec on it that made a gray dot in some of the pics, it's not on the car, just the lense!)
