American Water Spaniel
|
The American Water Spaniel's ability as both waterfowl retriever and upland hunter make it a versatile hunting dog. So versatile it's the one breed in the AKC Sporting Group that is not "classified". The AWS's national parent club has debated whether to choose spaniel or retriever designation, or to remain unclassified. The AWS should be 15-18 inches tall, 25-40 lbs., with a solid liver or dark chocolate coat that is closely curled or has a marcel effect. American Water Spaniel in the show ring --> |

An American Water Spaniel retrieves a training dummy from the water, demonstrating a nice delivery to hand. This breed's AKC parent club has developed its own Hunting Test program which addresses their land and water versatility. There is field work similar to upland spaniel hunting tests, and water work with doubles and blinds at the higher levels similar to retriever tests. |
