This lovely, lovely game of total carnage is brought to us from BUNGIE,
the makers of the Marathon Trilogy, Myth: The Fallen Lords, and Myth II.
In Minotaur up to seven people on different macs create characters and throw them into a random dungeon. Once inside, the carnage begins. Using an assortment of spells, weapons, armor, and items, the characters try to survive and keep others from surviving. Creativity combining the use of items within the dungeon allows for devastating effects. Alliances can form and break in the wink of an eye... For only ONE of the characters that entered the maze leaves alive...
First off, I'd like to say that I have only played Minotaur with 3 players in the game, and even that was rare. Unfortunately, there's no internet play at this point, and getting legions of my friends together on a mac LAN can be a bit tough. Maybe I can organize something with some of my fellow geeks at the university... hmmm...
Anyways, Minotaur used to be out of print, but Bungie brought it back with the Mac Action Sack, and it can be had for only $20!
There still isn't any internet play, but there's rumors of an open source Minotaur project from Bungie... Keep your eyes open!
Assorted Tips
Keep spare weapons and armor around incase your opponent decides to have a little fun with that rust spell. Actually, it is a good idea to have your bad armor and weapons equipped when you are casting spells and using ranged weapons, just incase your opponent starts a little rusting or shattering...
Take careful consideration when creating your character. Remember that a lore of 15 is required to cast all of the spells, with greater lore usually producing greater effects. Brawn is how much damage you do. Agility is how well you can hit and also how well you can avoid hits. I have also read on the signs that Gungnir (Odin's spear, only appears in a game with 4 or more players) requires a high brawn to use. In most of my games, I've found brawn to be pretty worthless. If you can hit, it don't matter how strong you are. And if every spell fizzles, what are you gonna do when they cast stoneskin or nuke all yer weapons? But again, Gungnir may make Brawny characters unstoppable (never played a 4 player game so I couldn't tell ya. ;) )
When someone is paralyzed, they are immune to all forms of damage and cannot be hurt... But any poisen that is currently in their system will stay there... A very powerful mage with a lot of lore can cause extreme amounts of damage this way. Beware.
Here is a mean little tactic... First of all, your going to need a wooden torus, a shadowgate spell, and a forcewall spell. These donut things protect you from the stalkers. Now find yourself a nice dead end with a stalker in it. Cast your forcewall so the stalker is trapped in the corner. Now run in the corner with the stalker and cast your shadowgate spell. Heh heh heh... Works every time. :)
Don't forget that Astral Hammer can destory items as well as walls...
Read those signs!
The Stave of Ultimate Doom can be used to "force" an Armageddon on the other players. So do that when you think you've got the best chance of survival...
Bows can be extremely powerful when used correctly. If your character has a high brawn he can deal some serious damage with a bow. They are best used from behind walls or forcewalls, so a passwall spell or a feather of levitation can come in very useful.
I will write more tips... There are just so MANY! :)
Theales is a fellow Minotaur fanatic and has provided me with a few tips of his own.
Mjollnir can be found in a game with 3 or more players and Gungnir can be found in a game with 4 or more. The spear really wastes and Mjollnir isn't too shabby either!
The pentagram has magic in it. It can change the effects of several spells if you cast them while standing in the pentagram. Experiment with it...
Do YOU have your own tips and would you like to see your name here??? Well then, tell me!
