But you should see the others, especially Huey. He is always hungry! Just yesterday he ate 2 fuzzy mice, 3 night crawlers and a half dozen (at least) kingworms ! Sometimes he even eats fish. Little Louie is more of a lady (I taught her good manners). She likes about 6 kingworms everyday and now and then has a taste for a little pinkie or night crawler. Souie got her name cause she ate like a pig and was getting fat. But then, she must have started thinking about matiing season and decided to watch her figure. She lost a little and even I have to admit she is looking better. Her favorites are nightcrawlers, sometimes kingworms and crickets, but never mice.
Our people are always offering us fruit and veggies, but "no thanks", although Huey will eat a grape now and then. He's funny to watch, plays with it awhile before he eats it. He'll try to bite it and it just jumps ahead of him. That'll go on all day if I don't remind him he's not supposed to play with food. Sometimes I wish I weren't the adult here.
Now About Vitamin Supplements:
As per de Vosjoli,
Mader, and Coborn, our food is dusted several times a week with a vitamin
supplement. When we were little, or not feeling well, we got them more often. My
people say that the vitamin supplements are to ensure we are getting a balanced
diet and remain healthy. We get a combination of Rep-Cal, Miner-All and
Nekton-Rep.
A word of caution about our food sources: if you catch your own insects for
your reptile friends, get them from areas you a certain
have not been sprayed with any pesticides or other toxins.
My people and our neighbors don't spray their yards, so we
are assured the grasshoppers we get in the summer are
safe.
Also, don't ever feed your reptiles fireflies! Recent
studies have demonstrated that " the ingestion of fireflies (or
"lightning bugs", as they are sometimes called) can kill lizards and,
thus, should be considered potentially toxic to all herps." (Adler,
1998)
