BB-57 SCRAPBOOK Updated 05/12/05 This picture of Father James Cunningham taken at the 1979 reunion inSioux Falls,South Dakota. Father Cunningham would give the Sunday Memorial Service at the reunions when he was attendance. One of his favorite times at the reunions was the sing alongs at poolside. Father passed away while living in Florida. This picture of the same type 16"Gun was sent to us by Milton Saylan of Palm Springs,Ca. Mr. Saylan took this at the dedication ceremony in Sioux Falls, S.D. HALSEY'S SADDLES There were two (2) saddles. One was from a Texas Chamber of Commerce and the other was either from Arizona or New Mexico. James O. Johnson reports that when he was in Washington D.C. a few years ago, he went to a Naval Museum just outside DC and the one saddle was in a glass case. James was on the work party that carried them aboard ship. GENERAL MACARTHUR CLOSES SURRENDER CEREMONIES ABOARD THE U.S.S. MISSOURI "HOLY STONING" Sanding the Deck 16 strokes to the board and shift. After the peace signing they decided to put the decks in a "peace time mode". When the ship left Tokyo Bay, the crew stripped the paint from the wood decks. Then they put sand and salt water on the deck and sanded them a 'Holy Stone'(fire brick). They worked on them daily, until 2 days out of port, someone decided they didn't look good enough. They sanded them again. Holy Stoning was done in unison. Submitted by James O. Assigned to the USS South Dakota he was wounded at Santa Cruz. He spent three months in the brig after the Navy learned of his masquerade.
