HALSEY'S SADDLES
There were two (2) saddles. One was from a Texas
Chamber of Commerce and the other was either from  Arizona or New Mexico. James O. Johnson reports that when he was in Washington D.C. a few years ago, he
went to a Naval Museum just outside DC and the one saddle was in a glass case. James was on the work party
that carried them aboard ship.

 "HOLY STONING"
Sanding the Deck

16 strokes to the board and shift. After the peace signing they decided to put the decks in a "peace time mode". When the ship left Tokyo Bay, the crew stripped the paint from the wood     decks. Then they put sand and salt water on the deck and sanded them a 'Holy Stone'(fire brick). They worked on them daily, until 2 days out of port, someone decided they didn't look good enough. They sanded them again. Holy Stoning was done in unison.
