Super Bowl of Sound Car Audio Competition
Pittsburgh, PA - Sunday Aug. 17th 1997
The Super Bowl this year was definitely a huge success, from the show cars and spl cars to the dealer and manufacturer booths, this event was definitely one not to miss. Firstly, the Super Bowl in PIttsburgh was an official IASCA key event that brought the loudest, most detailed cars in the country to the city of PIttsburgh. The dealers and manufacturers are who made this happen; dealers include, KICCS, Audio Communication, Goosebumps, Elite, Pro Audio Technologies, Secure-A-Car and World-Wide-Stereo. Manufacturers who attended the competition included PPI, JL Audio, Boss, Eclipse, X-Tant, Soundstream, Lightning Audio, Streetwires, Paramount Audio, Cerwin-Vega and more. The competition provided such a good time that I didn't even mind the slight rain we received during the evening. Well done!
Highlights
Some highlights of the day included some of the SPL cars, Sound Quality Cars, Security Systems, Manufacturer Demo Vehicles... basically almost every car could be considered a highlight because of the quality of every install that was there.
Boss Equalizer Armored Truck
<
Boss' new demo truck by The Equalizer Team (headed by Jim Pallai) was definitely a show stopper. The amazing install is housed in a 1989 Moore & Son Armored Truck and has enough power in it to shake down a house (actually, that may be possible! : ) . The speakers for this system included 60 Boss American 15" subwoofers housed in a free-air metal enclosure, 8 Boss 8" mid-bass woofers, 8 Boss 6.5" mid-bass woofers, 16 Boss Cannon 5" midrange and finally 16 Boss Tw20 soft dome tweeters, to arm the truck with 108 Boss speakers! In the back end of the rear-door has over 130 Bosses AVA 750 Amplifiers mounted in a rack along each side of trucks walls to create a total of 120,000 watts of raw power. You would probably think, "how does the truck have enough battery power and alternator power to run this massive amount of power?" But Boss has covered this aspect of this ride, they installed a 250 amp Ohio Generator Alternator and loaded the truck with, get this... 1266 Farads of Flux Capacitor. This truck could possibly be "the most powerful car stereo ever made" (Carl Schmidt - co-owner of the Equalizer) . To add the finishing touches the crew added neon to the inside as well as a custom paint job and gold interior trim on the panels. This was definitely a sight to see, the truck sounded like a Mack truck as it came into the lot for SPL testing; it hit 153.7 dB.

"East Side" 64' Chevy Impala
This likely would have to be my most memorable highlight of the event, a total Blue 64' Chevy restoration equipped with hydraulics and two 18's in the trunk; it looked like it was straight from a Dr. Dre video. When we came to the tent and saw this the car was sitting in 3-wheel motion and boasted it's very neat and detailed audio install in the trunk.
The audio system revealed 2 JL Audio 18W6 subs facing toward the rear seats in a plexi-glass enclosure. They were powered by 3 X-Tant amplifiers.
The car was a total restoration, we saw pictures of when they first bought the car and you would never know that this was the same car. Sfter restoring they also another problem, a fire caught in the trunk and singed their old car audio install (included Cerwin-Vega subs) , so they removed all of the old components and re-installed this beautiful car audio masterpiece.

The PPI Demo Vehicle
Precision Power provided us with their demo vehicle, a custom detailed Chevy Suburban, called "The Burb", all the way from Phoenix Arizona. The truck consists of PPI's new Powerclass amplifiers and flat-piston subwoofers (the subs and amps that hit the IASCA world record, 164.9, by Alma Gates) . a total of 8000 watts of amplification were located and displayed in the rear hatch on the cutom-built wall and deck, all mounted on plexi-glass and accented by red neon. Inside the truck housed the 12 PPI 10" flat piston subwofers on a wall opposite the aplifiers facing toward the front seats. The truck was also equiped with a TV and VCR unit in the rear-end of the center console; that's where the PPI reps resided when the rain started!
The Elite Car Stereo Team
Another side highlight of the day that sticks out in my mind would include the Elite Custom Sound & Security shop. Their booth was located right beside the dB drag racing area and they would not let people sit down on their side without you taking a t-shirt! They also provided some music in between match-ups (although they played Scarfaces - Smile over and over! : ) . They brought a very nice black Hummer to the competition for display. Elite has just opened a store in the Pittsburgh area (412-824-3334); they also have shops in Ohio as well.
