Favorite Places at the Beach

Please e-mail me with your choice for your Favorite Place at the Beach. If that place has a presence on the web, please send the url (web address) also.

My choice for "favorite place" is The Raven Restaurant. The Raven has been in business over 30 years and is still operated by Bobby and Ricky Dunnington. Check out their web site and stop in next time you're in town...maybe I'll see you there!

Well, many years ago it was Country Comfort, which is long gone. Then it was Abby Road......are they still around? Its been quite some time since I've been in the area and checked out the party scene!

My favorite places include Seashore State Park, ARE and Eden's Alley (long gone). I enjoyed the Dome when the likes of the Beach Boys, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and the Who played there.

Years ago when I was growing up at the beach Eaden Alley was the cool place to go. Above it was a coffee House (I can't remember the name) where we used to go to hear EmmyLou Harris and Judy (Juice) Kay Newton play folk music. Boy was that great.

By far my favorite place at the beach, was Rick's Cafe. You could drink as much coffee as you wanted to and all my friends hung out there, what could be better.

My choices: we always hung out at the Raven, Jewish Mother, Croatan in the summer or to Nags Head to escape the never ending onslaught of the tourists. Oh yea, now you can't cruise the strip anymore, but that used to be the favorite past time if you had no money.

23rd News Center and the Lamp Lighter Bar. You could always find someone there you knew no matter what time of day. The owner of the bar really liked us teenagers...treated us like adults, which was nice! That was a hangout for some of us after we were old enough to drink 3.2 beer!

My vote has to be for First Colony Coffee House. They have live music, and a great atmosphere. I highly reccomend their Milky Way's...

My "favorite places" would have to be Croc's for the partying and eating. The Jewish Mother is great too, especially on Sunday nights when they have Karoke. Croatan is great to get away from the tourists when they get too annoying and the boardwalk is still fun to walk down at night.

So many to choose from . . . I'd have to say Chick's restaurant (off Shore Drive) for dockside dining, Taste Unlimited for lunch, Uncle Harry's for ice cream, and the North End Beach (54th--my street) for relaxing.

We always liked The Shack on 17th street and Pequods in the middle 70's.

Anyone remember Flipper McCoys?
It's been years since I've been down to the Beach. The Fire Escape use to rock. Does it still exist? And The Rocks (when we were older) was a cool place to party.

It's been a very long time, but we sure did like to hang out after school at Ingram's Drug Store on 25th St. or on Sat. before a movie. Next door was the Boyce photo shop where we had Senior Portraits made and next to that was Timbre Music Store. I guess they are both long-gone, but a fresh-sqyeezed lemonade or limeade or a cherry coke at Ingram's was the best! During the summer any of the lifeguard stand was a good place to be.

My favorite place was the 16th street lifeguard stand where I worked for several years. All the lifeguards would eat at Kaufman's on 17th street. We also enjoyed Ingrams, the Beach Theater, and the Breakers Hotel on 25th Street. What a place to live.

My favorite hangouts were; for lunch, Lee's Cafe, great club sandwiches there, The Tiki Lounge for a cold beer after working @ the beach for the Umbrella Beach Service...Zero's Sub shop for a late night snack (I've yet to taste a better sub sandwhich anywhere), Peabodys where we lifeguards got in for free with our dates, saw Canned Heat there and of course the Dome where I got to see my all-time musical hero, Jimi Hendrix. A great big hello to all of my friends from high school in Virginia Beach...Efrain Osorio...would have graduated with the class of 70' but we moved back to California. Bye Ya'll.

Most of my favorite places are the clubs I played with either a band or solo. Peppermint Beach Club (1973) for the afternoon gigs, Jewish Mother as a solo act, Country Comfort, Bearded Clam, Oarhouse, Peabody's Warehouse, Rogue's Gallery, Redskins Club, King's Head Inn in Norfolk, Princess Theater (my first gig), Sideshow (1970), and I played at First Colonial High 9/15/72. I played the Dome for an art show or something in May 1971, and was in awe of being on that stage. Saw Derek and the Dominos there, too. My bands were Routine II, Harpitture Complex, Raintree, Pearl, Sky's the Limit and Crystal.

And then memories from the early 60's- My aunt and uncle ran the Excellent Restaurant on 17th and Atlantic for years. Seaside Amusement Park! The Trampoline place! The model railroad shop and miniature golf on a warm starry evening!
