Virginia Beach High School Alumni

Virginia Beach High School was built in 1952 as a replacement for
Oceana High School. Oceana High had fallen victim to her own geography,
being located at the end of the main runway for Oceana Naval Air Station.
With the Navy's transition to jet aircraft after World War II, the
noise level had made teaching (and concentration) difficult. The post
war building boom in Virginia Beach (as well as the baby boom) had
also dictated the need for more classrooms, so, for the first time,
Virginia Beach had her own high school, rather than sending students
to Princess Anne County schools.
At the time, the City of Virginia Beach was small, with her boundaries
extending only from Rudee Inlet to 47th Street and west only about a mile
from the ocean front, so the result was a very close relationship between
the community and the high school, and a very close knit student body. I
remember that as an 8th grader in 1963, I guickly got to know and become
friends with seniors and other "upper classmen". In the words of one of
our classmates, Virginia Beach High was the coolest little high school ever!
In the 1965 annual, The Hurricane, it was noted that we were "Looking
forward to the rise of a new and greater Virginia Beach High", however,
that was not to be as Virginia Beach High ceased to exist as a high school
at the close of the 1965 - 1966 school year after only 13 years. Virginia Beach
High was "replaced" by the new and larger
First Colonial High School, however, she will never be replaced in our hearts. Those
of us who had the good fortune to attend V.B.H.S. will always remember our
days at the "coolest little high school ever".
It is my hope that this little web site will provide a place to
congregate, to renew old friendships, to share information,
and to just keep in touch. Please take the time to sign the
guestbook and leave your e-mail address. Use
the Alumni Listings link below to find former class mates. E-mail me with any
thoughts, ideas or suggestions for this page. Send in any
information you think others might have interest in,
including any information regarding reunions. Especially,
please send in anything you may come across regarding Virginia Beach High
School.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
