Effectiveness by Design, publisher of leaflets featuring Michele Wyman designs and the multi-gauge Classic Beginnings booklet series, is a wholesale company. Our patterns and products are available through more than 200 retail yarn shops and mail order sources. Although we don't sell directly to the public, this catalog makes purchasing the hand knitting and crochet patterns you want as easy as 1, 2, 3:

Classic Beginnings.
What's New. Although the What's New page will be updated each time we introduce a new collection, it is Phase I completed!
Retailers. Our state-by-state list of yarn shops and mail order sources where you can buy Effectiveness by Design patterns and products changes on a regular basis, because our family of retailers never stops growing. We think you'll find our spruced up Retailers page even easier to navigate, but you can expect this page to change shape by the end of August.
Beginning September 1, our retailer list will include only those shops and mail order sources that receive automatic shipments of our newest collection as soon as those patterns are available. We are making this change to help you more easily contact retailers who either have what you want in stock or would be delighted to special order it for you.
Works in Progress Pages
Home. Most of our Home page is Phase I completed. What remains is to finish identifying and writing about our more-information topics.
Sweaters & Vests. While you're only able to view a portion of our sweater and vest patterns right now, the pictures and descriptions you are able to view appear in our new, easier to navigate format.
"Pages of Old"
We're working just as fast as we can, but currently the Accessories, Home Decor, and Other Products pages are in our "old" format and do not yet include our newest designs.
What Makes Our Patterns Such a Joy to Work With
There's just so many reasons <grin>! Patterns are our only business, and Michele Wyman's skills as technical writer, a communicator, and an avid knitter were in place well before she became a knitwear designer. When she made the leap into pattern writing and publishing, she already had opinions about what should be included in the ideal pattern. The result?
Effectiveness by Design patterns...
...are "yarn independent." You can work with any darn yarn you want!
...include size ranges generous enough to fit and flatter real people!
...feature timeless styles. You'll be knitting classics you and your loved ones can wear no matter what the current fashion focus!
...include design features that only look difficult to complete, making them a confidence booster for beginning knitters and a quick knit for all other knitters.
...are known for including the most thorough, accurate, easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow directions available. Whenever appropriate, patterns include words and charts, detailed schematics, and how-to instructions/illustrations for special stitch patterns and techniques. In fact, many shop owners use our patterns in their knitting classes.
...frequently include options: more than one gauge, more than one look, suggestions for "upsizing" or "downsizing," suggestions for working with yarns from your stash, and more. You can use one pattern over and over and get different results each time!
How Much Do Patterns Cost?
As you navigate our catalog, you'll notice that pricing information is not included. This is because pattern costs and shipping rates vary depending on the retailer you select and where you are geographically located. The retailer you choose to work with will be happy to tell you how much patterns cost, what will be the additional shipping rate, and how to pay for your purchase. Don't forget to ask!
