ED EPISODE APPEARS IN TV GUIDE'S TOP 100
A classic 1963 episode of Mister Ed which starred sportsman
Leo Durocher has been named as the 73rd best TV episode of all time
by American listings magazine TV Guide. The episode called 'Leo
Durocher Meets Mister Ed' beat off some stiff competition to land the
spot. According to Steven Reddicliffe, TV Guide's editor in chief,
"choosing the top episodes involved lots of arguing among the magazine's
editors, which we're still doing". A complete list of all 100 episodes
can be checked out at: http://gabrielmedia.org/news/100list.html
YOUNG
HITS OUT OVER ANIMAL CRITICISM
Actor Alan Young (who played Wilbur in Mister Ed) has hit
out at criticism over the use of animals onscreen during an interview
with the Los Angeles magazine Mother Jones. He is quoted as saying:
"You've got people in this town, such as Bob Barker, who don't
know a bloody thing about animals. Yet they get their gun off by calling
themselves animal protective people." Young himself comes under
fire in the article for starring alongside Mister Ed. The article
reads: 'Even the death of Young's co-star in the early '70s left activists
skeptical. "For a horse to die at 19, you're talking middle age,"
said Barbara Eustiss-Cross, director of the Life Foundation, an environmental
group. "I would certainly question it."' Read the whole controversial
article at: http://mojones.com/mother_jones/JF97/rothman.html
STUDY
CALLS MISTER ED 'WAS A SEXIST PIG'
The Journal Of Popular Culture has published a study by Ann Shillinglaw
entitled 'Mister Ed Was A Sexist Pig.' It suggests that
women watching the show were 'faced with unsympathetic female characters
juxtaposed against likeable, funny, even magical, males.' Sheesh...
what rubbish!
ACTOR
SPEAKS AT ARTS FESTIVAL
Alan Young spoke at the 13th Annual Donna Reed Festival for the
Performing Arts in Denison, Iowa, USA. He also participated at the event
last year. More details on Alan at: http://www.frii.com/~fujii/html/people/young.html
