Abigail Wooley Born: July 7, 1830 Died: Jan. 3, 1905
Married: Oct. 11, 1848
Not much is known about the origins of the Slack family at this writing. The Slack name could be German (Slaught) or Irish (Slacke), but no connections have been made prior to James. His father may have been named William, and he may have had a sister Nancy.
It was discovered in a diary in the possession of Ezra Slack, researched by Charlie, Ezra's son, and shared with Elwin Slack by either Clara Abbott or Mary Ann Conn who had the diary in the 1960's, that the family lived awhile in Townsend Township, County of Norfolk, Ontario. Eventually, the family moved to the area of Lakeside, Harrington, St. MaryÕs, and got lot #29, a homestead in the 12th Concession. The rough notes taken off that diary by Elwin Slack are all that is currently known of their lives. No one seems to know the whereabouts of the diary. Perhaps when it surfaces, more about the family origins will be known. This homestead can be located, however no research has been done about the family living there.
The family did move to Michigan in 1867-68. James Slack and his sons Ezra, Bradford, and William came over first and bought the land. Ezra was 17, Bradford 15, and William 13. When they were ready to move the family, they came to Port Huron and the boys met their father there. He had the horses and wagon. Presumably, they bought the land on which their family had its farm -- in Bingham Township.
Abigail married James Slack Oct. 11, 1848. They had a very large family including Amanda (1849 - 1850), Ezra (1850 - ), Bradford (1852-1910) William (1854 - 1936), Mary Ann (1856 - 1914), Marthy (1958 - 1858), James Slack (1864 - ), Hannah (1861 - ), Enoch (1868 - 1937), Sarah (1871 - 1892 ), John (1874 - 1941).
50th Anniversary Celebration Newspaper article Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Slack of Ubly celebrated their 50th Anniversary, last -Tuesday. The occasion was commemorated by a large number of friends and relatives, Children and grandchildren assembled to a goodly number and passed an evening that is rarely seen in the history of any family. Parents look back over 50 years of wedded bliss.
North Norfolk Pioneers Townsend Township
The inhabitants of the northern part of the county, particularly of the district now forming the Township of Townsend, were among the earliest arrivals in Norfolk. The fertility and general excellence of the land which characterized this region, was no doubt responsible for the steady flow of immigration. By the year 1817 it boasted a population of over 700, prominent among whom were the Beemers, Culvers, Slacks, Sovereens, McMichaels, Kitchens, Barbers, Duncombes, Joseph Woolley, Adam Bowlby, Job Loder, Job Slaght, Ezekiel Foster, Amos Manwell, Jacob Clouse, Ezra Parney, John Walker, John Haviland, Levi Boughner, John Heath, Richard Wilcox, Nathan Wade and many others.
A common Slack origin is unclear. One source has indicated a Dutch origin stemming from the name "Slaught or Slecht"and a seafaring history. Another source suggests a British origin. In either case, arrival in pre-revolutionary America is likely. Canadian Slacks seem to have loyalist roots. I have evidence of two lines in Leeds Co.Ont. (c.1800). Other Slack loyalists settled in other areas of Canada. You might contact Ms. Mary K. Maynard . She maintains a lot Slack data. Tim Slack, timslack@travel-net.com
I too saw the marriage record of James Slack and Abigail Woolley. It was originally recorded in the Brock District Marriage Register which included Oxford and Brant Counties. I saw the transcript prepared by Dan Walker. It reads:
James Slack, Yeoman, of Dereham to Abigail Wooly of E Oxford 11 Oct 1848, Burford, Rev. Sherman, wit. Alfred Roblin, Mary Treadwell, Yeoman--R Mutrie
To-day I went to the local library and found the marriage of JAMES SLACK and ABIGAIL WOOLY married OCTOBER 11, 1848, I photo copied it and if you wish I will mail it to you. And I check the 1851 census of OXFORD EAST, JAMES SLACK, age 25, farmer and a BAPTIST, A. SLACK, age 22, BAPTIST, E. SLACK, age 2,{male} BAPTIST. There is also a WOOLEY FAMILY listed above the SLACKS-Sharon Bain.

I am planning on changing my present last name to "Barentsen" in order to discard the negative connotation of "Slack" and to retain a recently discovered heritage I am proud of.
The name SLECHT is in old duch not negative. It means: SMOOTH, LEVEL, INCONSIDERABLE. For example: "een slechte zee" is "a quiet sea". (Not: a bad sea) "een ridder arm en slecht" is "a man of nobility but humble".
A famous Dutch chain of storys of old books is named "De Slechte". When you solve in Holland a problem. Then you "beslecht de zaak".
In more recent time humble and incosiderable turned in "bad".
SO BE PROUD OF YOUR NAME. Dear Elwin I think I have solved the mystery of the land. Grandpa (James) William Slack lived on (near Harrington and Lakeside). Some one else inquired about John and Lavina Slack and their data, and I hoped to find out some mare details about those families, and I started going over maps I had together with what you sent me. I believe I know now where the land was. I am. Sending you a mar of the County of Oxford. 1) Look at East Nissouri and West Nissouri between Concessions XIV and it is the dividing line. 2) Locate Harington in W. Nissouri and Lakeside P.O. in East Nissouri 3) Using the "old Map" and Key map 17 that you haveÑcount over to XII township and lot 29 and you can approximant4e Grandpa William SlackÕs homestead. 4) If you want to reconstruct the whole picture youÕll probably need map 14. 5) If you have a copy of Key map 14, I wouldnÕt mind one.
Its funny I have searched all my old maps looking for Harrington and Lakeside, and then I run across them tonight. I think this is probably accurate! What threw me off originally was that presumed Harrington was south, and it really is northeast or the land. Of course, having been to Ontario--it is so mixed up; you can't tell where you're at without a compass.
I also found a map showing Townsend Township County of Norfolk, so I am enclosing that also (where supposedly William James and Nancy were born),
We have bean so busy, we still have lots to do on our house before we can move into it--but we keep pushing toward that goal. WeÕd love to be living downstairs before the holidays.
Re : 1851 census James Slack was a Baptist Abigail was a Baptist Ezra was a Baptist
Notes for ABIGAIL WOOLEY: More is known about Abigail Wooley. Abigail Wooley is the third child of 7 born to Enoch Wooley and Sally Nicholes Wooley. AbigailÕs father Enoch was born April 31, 1799 in either Ulster Co. Penn. or N.Y. Her mother Sally Nicholes was born April 17, 1806 in Duches Co. N.Y. In the family, their grandson, Bradford Slack used to say he was a "Yankee Polecat" so it is presumed this is where this came from. Enoch and Sally settled Lot 1, 6th Concession EAST OXFORD, near Woodstock and Muir in central, east, Ontario. Enoch Wooley paid $5 extra to be on the stage line road. The houses (two were eventually built) sat side by side on the lot, about 200-ft. apart. The old barns, with stone cellars, you drive into, are still visible. The #1 house, mentioned in the 1851 Canadian Census. Housed the whole family. The House was a log house, 1 story. It may have been possible that James and Abigail and their young 2-yr. old son Ezra were either living with Abigail's parents or in a shanty on the property in 1851. They are in the l85l census. # 2 house was in an old photo in property of Helen McCallum, and is the one everyone wanted to see when they came back from Michigan to visit. #3 house was popular because it had lots of Apple trees, and a row of Spruce trees along the side and old posts with a curved top. (See diagram and map of location) Fred and Edith Taylor, descendants of Elizabeth Wooley Taylor, still live within a half-mile of the original homestead and know the history of the area very well.
Enoch and Sally raised 7 children, 5 girls and 2 boys. Not much is known of the boys, but quite a bit is known about the girls. The first child born was Elizabeth. She was born in Upper Canada, London District, and Town of Oxford Oct. 29, 1826. She married Henry Taylor. He died Jan. 3, 1900. She died Jan. 23, 1911. They had 2. Children --Fred Taylor who married Jessie Overholt and David Taylor who married Elizabeth Overholt. The second child was David Wooley, born Sept. 16, 1828 at Norwich, London District, Ontario. It is not certain whom David married. There is a baptismal entry in the records of the Baptist Church of E.Oxford that David Wooley and Sarah Wooley were baptized Aug. 2, 1859. He was the first trustee of the East Oxford Baptist Church at Muir, near his home. The church was destroyed by a tornado, however records are located at the Archives at McMaster University at Hamilton. He died in Michigan and is buried with his wife Elanor in Forester Cemetery. He died Dec. 7, 1907. He must have been married twice. Noting is known of the children, but it is believed he had three. In the family plot at Forester.
Enoch Wooley (1869 - 1953 and his wife Margaret (1866 - 19 ) and person John H. Wooley (1874 - 1928). DavidÕs son Fred Wooley (David Frederick) did go with the H.B. Little family to Winnipeg and Teulon in 1898 when he was 16 - 17, and he homesteaded there near Teulon. He married Charlotte Coupland and they are buried in Windsor Cemetery, south of
Teulon. The headstones read David Frederick Wooley (1871 - 1957) Charlotte Coupland Wooley (1885 Ð 1959) David Frederick and Charlotte had a son Jesse (1907 - 1958) who never married and a son Ed Wooley who married Mary Wake and was in the Winnipeg fire department. A daughter Lisa Wooley married Garnet McClean. David Wooley co-owned the original Ontario homestead with his father Enoch Wooley. He was also an orchardist, and sent boxes of apples to Winnipeg to his son Fred. Third child was Abigail Wooley. She lived most of her life in Bingham Township. See comments preceding. Fourth child was Enoch Wooley. He was born July 25, 1833. He does not appear to be living with the family in the 1851 census, and was 18 at the time. No one seems to know where he went, where he lived or died.
Fifth child was Loisa (Louisa) Wooley, born Oct. 7, 1835. She married John (James) Martin on April 23, 1856. They had two daughters -- Sarah and Louise. Louisa married Will Elliott, died Nov. 13, 1943 and is buried at Delhi cemetery Norfolk Co. Louisa raised Margaret Ryder who knows the history and lives near Norwich, Ontario. The other daughter, Sarah married Walter Marshall.
Sixth child born was Mary Ann Wooley, born Apr. 26, 1840. She married John Knaggs. She was baptized Jan. 29, 1882, her husband in Apr. 11,1866. They had three children. Russell married Ella and they had a son Wendel who may have been retarded. A second son George lived in Detroit, and a third son Wilfred was also in the family. Seventh Child was Phebe (Phoebe) Wooley who was born April 12, 1842 in the District of Brock, Oxford, Ontario. She married Alex Little, brother Brother of N.B. Little. They lived most of their life near Sandusky, Michigan, and had a farm as well as a city house. They went through the fire of 1871, by hiding down in the well on their land. Phebe and Alex had 5 children -- Ada, Judson, Sarah, Roy and Ira. Phebe died Dec. 5, 1917.
Abigail married James Slack Oct. 11, 1848. They had a very large family including Amanda (1849 - 1850), Ezra (1850 - ), Bradford (1852-1910) William (1854 - 1936), Mary Ann (1856 - 1914), Marthy (1958 - 1858), James Slack (1864 - ), Hannah (1861 - ), Enoch (1868 - 1937), Sarah (1871 - 1892 ), John (1874 - 1941).

Notes for SARAH JANE SLACK: Taken from "The Free Methodist" paper, Chicago, February 1, 1893.
Sarah Shepard was born in Bingham, Huron Co. Michigan, December 13, 1872 and died December 10, 1892 at Gladstone, Michigan.
Sarah was the youngest daughter of Brother James and Sister Abigail Slack.
Sister Slack received a telegram and came at once, arriving in time to pray with her daughter and to point her to Christ. The following testimony was written, at the request of the parents, by Rev. O. J. Blackford, pastor M. E. Church.
On the 8th inst. I was called to her bedside. I now believe she realized this was her last sickness; and it rejoiced my heart to hear her utter these words, "Peace from God the father and from our Lord Jesus Christ." She spoke freely regarding her condition.
When asked if she realized who Christ came to save, she said in a clear voice, 'sinners'; and also said, "I know that my Redeemer liveth."
She prayed for herself, but did not forget to pray for those who were left behind. May love remain in the hearts of all her relatives.
During all her sickness there was not a mental pain apparent, and never did she express any fear.
The smiles that sealed her lips in death and smoothed her livid brow can never be mistaken. It was the seal of Christ, coming to claim his own. All the surroundings of death were pure as the prayer of a saint. She received, at her request, the baptismal rites, and God hath chosen her for higher life.
Mrs. T. R. Shepard was married to Mr. T. R. Shepard a little more than a year ago, and moved to Gladstone with her husband, where she died. Her remains were brought home to Bingham, for burial. She leaves a husband, father, mother, brothers and sisters to mourn her early death. Let prayer be offered for the bereaved ones. The writer preached from 2 Samuel 19:18.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Huron County. Published by ChapmanBrothers in 1884. Page 288. Bradford Slack, merchant, at Ubly, was born March 25, 1852, in Oxford Co., Ont. He came to Bingham Township with his parents, James and Abigail (Wooley) Slack, in 1867. They belong to the farming community and are still residents of the township. Mr. Slack was reared to the occupation of his father, and was under the protection and influences of his paternal home until 20 years of age. On reaching manhood, he bought 80 acres of land on section 18, BinghamTownship, which, like himself remained to be tested in use and value. He at once set vigorously at work to clear and improve and erect a home. He proceeded with his efforts until he had accomplished the reclamation of 50 acres, when he sold the place, a year subsequent to his removal to the village of Ubly. He established there the business he has since conducted, which includes two branches of trade, general merchandise and a tin shop. Mr. Slack owns four improved lots in the village. He is Republican in political connection, and has discharged the duties of the minor local offices of his township. He is and has been considerably interested in school matters. His marriage to Mary Ross occurred in 1872 in Bingham Township, and they were the parents of four children-Ettie J., Mary A., Guy and Martha. Mrs. Slack was born in Scotland, in 1852. Slack, Bad Axe: Andrew and Hazen Slack both or Detroit, Frank Slack, Ubly; Herbert Slack,Grand Rapids, and William Joseph Slack, Gerber, Califorina. Harvey, Warren, Arthur -- had a Dodge dealership and hardware store and sold implements for a time. The store was called Slack Bros. and it was located in Bad Axe. Harvey and Arthur died one day apart in February (4th and 5th 1920) after contracting a very contagious flu that they got while attending a welcome home party for their brothers and friends in Huron Co. James Franklin Slack was a druggist and died in1940. According to Elwin Slack, Grandfather William Slack was a justice or the peace when they lived on a farm near Ubly. He married many couples in the course or his duties. Later someone realized that he was not a citizen, so maybe he didn't legally hold the office; and maybe those marriages were all invalid. Therefore it was decided he should be naturalized as soon as possible.

Notes for MARY ANN SLACK: Marv Ann Slack / husband John Nugent
Sister of Bradford Slack Born 2, 1836 Died: August 50. 1914 Married: Dec. 16. 1874 Mary Ann Slack was the 5th child born to James and Abigail Wooley Slack. She was born in E. Napouri Oxford Ontario, and came with her family to Bingham Twp., Huron Co. Michigan. She married into the Nugent family, a prominent, hard working family whose farms became note worthy in the area. One became a Centennial farm. The Nugent family goes back to the French in 1172, who went to Ireland. Because a feudal system existed in Ireland and farmers were already there; they migrated to the U.S. on large cargo ships, which carried lumber from Michigan. It was a stormy trip across the Atlantic, but their spirits were undaunted. John Nugent, father of her husband, John Nugent, emigrated from Limerick County, Ireland to Brook County Canada in 1831. He took squatterÕs rights for his seven boys. One hundred acres each, but someone got to the crown and complained he had no deed, so he was forced to give up the land. Ax in hand and bag on back, he came down the St. Lawrence to Michigan. He landed in Forestville and eventually walked to Verona, joining other settlers. Later he bought 160 acres of land in Huron Co. at $1.50 an acre. They cut down the100-170 foot trees of oak and pines for housing and to sell. This was in 1877, just before the tragic fire of 1880. Nails were fashioned from strong oak and logs were notched together. It was difficult work in the undergrowth and vines. One of the sons was Howard Nugent, Mary Ann and John's son. He founded a special farm. The barn was built by him, and improved by his sons. He cut down two trees, perhaps 150 ft. high, back of where the barn now stands. He hewed these into 72 ft. long beams to be used in barn construction. An old wheel was also made and arranged in the haymow to facilitate pitching the grain. These are still in the barn.
Howard was born August 22, 1879 near Bad Axe. He married Alice Porsche in 1906 in Sacred Heart Church in had Axe, Michigan. They had seven children: Loretta, Ardis, Percy, Ralph and William. Leon and Ronald are deceased. The Nugents raised Holstein cattle, among the first pure breeds brought to the country. He developed a herd of over be, believed to be one of the oldest in continued operation in the county. Then in 1920 he built a new farmhouse and garages, sheds etc. Today there are 425 acres of farmland, mostly tile drained with some stands if tall timber. The name of the farm is Nugent's Avoncrest, with much credit going to the youngest son William. Howard Nugent was supervisor of Bingham Township for 17 years and was elected rep. in the State capitol at Lansing. He was on many committees and was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1959 for four two-year terms, longest tern in history. The homestead is now a centennial farm as some members of the Nugent family have lived on it for over 100 yrs. It was so designated by the Michigan Historical Society and the Detroit Edison Company, who presented a family heritage a plaque to be placed on the farm. Elinore and Irwin Marquardt (her mother was Ida, father Warren Nugent now resides on the farm.
Mary Ann Slack married John Nugent in 1874. Together they raised six children. Hattie married a man named Krug, Warren married Ida Pettinger. Warren Nugent came out west, and wanted to stay, but he returned home. He liked the Littles and the Slacks and visited Bellingham and the San Juan Islands. Warren and Ida married in 1910 and had 7 children. Elinore in1911 married Irwin Marqnardt in 1957. They have 5 girls and 1 boy. She was hospitalized, and was 93 yrs. old at the time. She said she had heard her husband often speak about the family out west, and how he "shed he could have lived out there too. But, they had lost contact, and she was so glad to hear about the other family. Howard Nugent married Alice Porsche. Alice's family had emigrated from Germany in 1881, and she was born in 1883. 3 and 1/2 mi. south of Bad Axe in a shanty provided by the sawmill. Her family had left Germany, because her father was tired of being a German soldier. Adept and industrious, Alice's mother worked for a nearby family, and her father Charles worked in a mill. As lumbering decreased. The family turned to raising sheep, then spinning and dying it. Charles was an apprentice to a weaver in Germany so he knew how to weave the wool into attractive blankets, carpets and wool cloth. The life was hardy and had its difficult times. Obituary - John Nugent And again we are called upon to give unto the master another of our oldest residents, this time JOHN NUGENT, whose name is familiar to all residents of the township and county who died Thursday at 2:00 in the afternoon with Bright's disease. In carefully diagnosing the case, the physician claimed that he had been suffering about 3 years with that dreadful disease, yet unconscious of any such thought until about a 'year ago', when in the act of lifting a heavy stone, his back gave out and from that time on until about a week ago the disease gradually extend its grip upon him until he was compelled to remain at home. At this stage, his wife and family became alarmed and sent for those who were absent from home and also for his brothers and sisters, some in the northern part of Michigan and others in the state of Washington who immediately answered the summons for their Presence at his bedside Wed. evening January l1th was the beginning of the closing hours when he should be removed from this world to the world beyond. At this time he was taken with a slight stroke of paralysis which affected his wrist. On Thursday about 11:00 he was taken with a more severe stroke which affected his right side while his left seemed to suffer the reaction and became extremely active. The scene was indeed pitiful and brought tears to the eyes of his friends, who so unsparingly poured out their sympathies in endeavoring to quiet, if possible, his unnerved and unconscious condition. In this state he remained for some hours, when he became quiet and seemingly rested until 4 o'clock Sat. morning when he was taken with another stroke, and still unconscious, he lived until 2 o'clock when he passed from life into death. The deceased was born in the township of Brook Ontario, March 20,1830 and at the aged 16 came to Michigan where he lived until Dec. 6, 1874 when he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Slack. They immediately took up residence on the farm, which he occupied until death, upwards of 27 yrs. The marriage was exceedingly prosperous and happy. The 6 children who have grown to womanhood and manhood and his beloved wife and mother are left to mourn the loss of an extraordinary husband and father. The county has also lost a great friend whose influence and worth spared no rains, time or money in the help of aiding and educating others and farmers less prosperous. Yet he was stern and followed his convictions implicitly and with this trait of character, he with a few others, became the promoters of the Huron Co. Mutual Fire Ins. Co. which has up to today blessed many of the homes or the county. Besides being a benevolent man, he was fraternal and at time of his death held membership in Gleaners, Maccabees and Grange orders. The funeral occurred from his late farm residence and at 1 Tues. afternoon a short service was held. Then, on to the M.E. Church at Bad Axe where Rev. Bartlett an old friend from F.M. Church at Genessee Co.,Elk preached the funeral sermon. Then the burial was at Colfax Cemetery. , l 1/2 mi. west of Ubly. It is with profound sadness we chronicle the above death of our friend and neighbor, whose pleasant smile and hearty handshake -we shall ever miss. Accept our deepest sympathies, wife, brothers, sisters at the loss of dear husband, father. ************************************** GIVN Mary Ann SURN SlackMarv Ann Slack / husband John NugentSister of Bradford SlackBorn 2, 1836Died: August 50. 1914Married: Dec. 16. 1874Mary Ann Slack was the 5th child born to James and Abigail Wooley Slack. She was born in E. Notes for MARGARET DELL OIE: History of Margaret Slack
Margaret Dell Oie was born in Polson, Montana; May 2nd, 1915 to Olie Oie and Margaret Louise MacKay Oie. Margaret was the fifth of 11 children. She is survived by her sisters: Carrie, Thelma, Christine, Virginia and her brother; Bobby. She is preceded in death by her brothers: George, John, Thurston, Leo and Jerry.
MargaretÕs father Olie Oie, was an immigrant from Norway. He arrived alone in the United States at age 14 and essentially hitch hiked from Ellis Island to Minnesota. There he met and married MargaretÕs mother, Margaret McKay in Minnesota or Iowa. They arrived in the Polson area soon after where Olie opened a Blacksmith Shop.
Margaret met her husband Howard, in Polson and they married soon after. They had two children Robert and James. Both boys were born in Shelby, Montana, where Howard was stationed as a veterinarian in the agricultural department of the United States Government. When Jim and Bob were very young the family moved back to Polson for a short time before moving on to Helena, Montana where the boys attended grade school and intermediate school.
In 1959 when Hawaii became the 50th State and the boys were 13 and 16 the family moved to Hawaii for a seven year stay. Howard was Veterinarian-in-charge of the new State of Hawaii, a difficult, challenging job. Both boys graduated from Kailua High School on the Island of Hawaii. This was MargaretÕs favorite place in the world and a wonderful move for the family.
After a 7 year stay in Hawaii the family moved back to Helena, Montana where Howard finished his federal service as Veterinarian-in-charge of Montana. They lived in Helena for a time after retirement.
After the boys were grown, Margaret became a very active member of Eastern Star in Helena and the Nile Patrol.
In 1986, Margaret and Howard moved to Polson to continue in retirement. They lived there until April 1997 when they moved to Spokane.
