Bullet Trivia -- Answer Requested
I have a question about bullet velocity. Why is it that a bullet fired from a gun with a longer barrel will travel with a faster velocity than a similar bullet fired from a similar gun with a shorter barrel? This seems to be a well-known fact, but I do not know why it is true.

Info Re: Liege United Arms Co. Ltd.
I am trying to find out some info on a shotgun that has been in the family for quite some time. Supposedly it was my purchased by my great-grandfather in the early years of the 20th Century. It was passed on to his son (my grandfather) then his son (Dad) and is now in my possession. It is a 12 gauge, double barrel (side by side), with twin triggers and twin external hammers. The walnut stock has been 'altered'. Someone, probably Dad, cut the end of it off and added a rubber cushion butt plate. (I remember Dad saying, "Watch out, son, it kicks like a southern mule!") Otherwise it is in fine, functional condition. Could someone enlighten me as to the possible age of this weapon and maybe some place I could get more information about the Liege United Arms. Co. Ltd.?

shotgun/rifle info and valuation help needed
Hi, I just found your group and hope you can help me with some info and valuation of three shotguns and a rifle. The first is a 12g double barrel, stamped in the body is the name Riverside Arms Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass, USA. Patented April 20, 1915. I would like to know more about this gun, the maker and it's value. The second is a Wards Western Field 20g single shot, Model 94c, and 10SB94TB are stamped in the body. The third is an Iver Johnson .410g single shot, #383 or 388 6C, Champion stamped in the body. The fourth is a rifle that appears to be military. It has US with a ball and wavy lines above the ball stamped in the underside stock. It also has #3AKA3B, and #1255243 A stamped on it. The gun is a bolt-action, loads from below the magazine, has a full stock to near the end of the barrel, a folding calibrated site on the front of the magazine/body. No other identifiers on it. I know little to nothing about guns or their values. I would like to be able to sell these for whatever their reasonable value is. I don't want to make a fortune, or give them away due to ignorance of their value. Any help you guys could offer me would be appreciated. I could tell you anything you want to know about old Mopars, Triumph motorcycles, Power King tractors etc.....but guns are out of my experience. Thanks, Charlie.

Don't Use Gun Broker!
This is a warning to buyers about Gun Broker. Their auctions are not true auctions because they allow sellers to stop auctions at any time if they don't get the kind of money they're looking for. It's clearly against their posted rules but they refuse to address the issue. My accounts were terminated because I posted my frustrations in their forums. They can't handle the truth so they terminated my account. E-mail me and I'll forward the correspondence and tell me what you think. Pass it on to the good folks you know who work hard for their money and want a fair deal. Gun Broker is totally geared toward sellers.

RE:
It's because the gasses are trapped for a longer period of time with a longer barrel and so more energy is transferred to the bullet. Try this: take two drinking straws and cut one two inches long. Leave the other full length. Use two spitballs of the same size and see which blows further.

RE: Bullet Trivia
It is not necessarily true that a longer barrel equals higher velocity now with smokeless powders as it was with black powder because the extra barrel length gave the powder charge time to burn more completely. Modern powders have more tightly controlled burning rates to give the best performance in barrels of varying lengths with varying charge/bullet weights.

I am interested in starting a personal collection of WWII era rifles. Can someone recommend a reliable source? Does anyone have any advice or tips they could share? The guns don't have to be mint condition, or even work. I just want to build an interesting collection I can pass on to my kids. RE: Sauer pistols
At one time Sauer was imported by G-U Inc. in Omaha, NE. They might be able to help youy determine when they were imported. If the guns were imported after 1968 the importer's name will be on the gun somewhere. G-U is at 402.330.4492 or www.skbshotguns.com

RE: Shotgun and rifle information and valuation needed.
Charlie, I think your Riverside Arms Co. shotgun was made by J Stevens Arms co. They were a division of Savage Arms and I think they may have information on their older brands as this. Check their website www.savagearms.com I think, and they have a historian that can help out. The Iver Johnson Champion .410 was made from 1909-1973. If it is one of the older plain models with no checkering on the stock or forend or pistol-grip cap or a top matted rib then it is worth from $100-$150. The rifle you have sounds like it may be a 1903A1 Springfield rifle. It was used during WWI and WWII. If you could send pictures of all three guns to me I could look them up and give you a general idea as to a minimal condition for your own use. I am not a professional appraiser, just a collector. If you were wanting to sell the Iver Johnson, I would like to buy it from you for a good price. I have an Iver Johnson 16 gauge and it needs a friend. If you have a 1903A1 rifle, it may be worth from $400-$975 depending on how much of the original finish and parts are still there. I have one that was sporterized or "butchered" by some not so intelligent person. But then they were selling for $15-$20 from the government as surplus.

Western Field 20 Gage Bolt action question
I just purchased a 20 gage Western Field (Montgomery Wards) shotgun at an estate sale. Several boxes of shells came with the gun. Some are 3 inch magnum shells and others are 2 and 3/4 inch high velocity shells. There are no markings on the barrel or anywhere else that i can find to indicate the chamber size. Both size shells seem to fit the gun ok. Is it safe to use either size shell in the gun? Any knowledgeable advice is appreciated, Thanks, Martin

RE: Leige United Arms Co Ltd
Congratulations on having a firearm from an area noted for fine firearms: Liege, Belgium. Earlier Browning Auto 5's and Superposed shotguns were born there. Yours likely predates 1900 so you may want to check the barrel markings for additional information and powder type before firing it, as it may not handle smokeless powder. I have a somewhat newer SxS by the same maker that the previous owner sys he got in the 1930s, no model name, but a serial number 31236, two triggers but hammerless, knurled solid rib, but have not found any definitive data regarding dating of the guns by serial numbers from this company. I have seen several other SxS (listed in Australian auctions for modest prices (about $250 US) even though I find mine to be a fine shotgun and worth more than that to me as a functional firearm. I too would appreciate learning of a web site or reference with more information about this company and any references to describe and interpret the company markings, as well as more about your shotgun.

Info needed for a 410
Looking for information on a 410. Only markings on the gun is Hercules and then also Montgomery Ward is marked on it as well. There are numbers on the bottom: 90429A This number is also inside as well. Do not know much about this gun ie: age, info on it etc. My father acquired this gun at an auction and needs to find parts to it. There is a part missing. I think he said it was near the breach? If you can't tell, I know nothing about the names of gun parts. All I know is the missing part is on the top of the gun near where you put the shell. Looking for parts to it. Does anyone know where he could find parts to it? ANY information or a heads up to a link where we can obtain info would be GREATLY appreciated. Please email me with anything.

RE: bullet velocity v. barrel length
the longer the barrel is the more chance the powder has to act on the bullet. This of course is subject to the law of diminishing returns as the gasses from the powder only have so much energy. Also different calibers have different purposes therefore pistols with smaller cases and faster burning powders require shorter barrels to reach their potential, the converse is true with larger case capacity and slower burning powders.

RE: Leige United Arms Co Ltd
Karl. Your SxS sounds very similar to my own. Dual triggers, but hammerless. Mine has the same solid rib. Also, very ornate scroll work on most of the metal. I think that is somewhat common for Liege firearms. I am also looking for information, and have yet to find much. I did find an email address for Liege-Arms in Belgium. I have written them, but have not heard back. The address is liegearms@hotmail.com if you are interested.

RE: "Leader" Gun
Rusty, Your gun is almost certainly a Baker Batavia Leader manufactured by the Baker Gun company of Batavia, New York. It could also be a Baker Batavia Leader mfg. by Crescent Arms Company for Folsom Arms of Norwich CT. Baker sold the Company to Folsom in December of 1919. This grade gun in good condition with steel barrels is worth between $325 and $500 depending upon condition. If it has Damascus barrels it's probably worth less. Hope this helps. Bill Glueck

RE:
the longer barrel makes the bullet go farther and faster because the bullet is pushed by the pressure inside the barrel the entire time it is inside the barrel and since the bullet is in the longer barrel longer it is pushed longer thus gaining a little more speed... that's the best i can explain it. when the bullet leaves the short barrel there is still pressure that could be utilized that just escapes into the air.

RE: Bullet Trivia Answer
To understand the answer to your question you need only to understand where a bullet gets its' velocity. A bullets' velocity is created by the expansion of a detonation (burning gun powder). As long as the detonation is trapped behind the bullet its' expansion will increase the bullets velocity. Only after the bullet exits the muzzle does the detonation expand into the atmosphere (i.e. muzzle flash). Therefore the longer the muzzle is, the more time the detonation has to accelerate the projectile (bullet). This is where the term muzzle velocity comes in, because once the projectile exits the muzzle it begins its' deceleration. Keep on shooting!

I recently purchased the same double barrel shotgun. "T. Barker" engraved hunter and rabbit on left side, hunting dog on the right side. On top between the barrels there is "Belgium Blued Steel". Underneath the barrels at the break down, there are symbols stamped on both barrels. The internet shows possible manufacturers; Crescent, H & D Folsom Arms Co., Iver Johnson, or The Baker, Hamilton and Pacific Company. I have no other info. Please respond if you have some.

RE: Stevens/Savage Arms 410. Model 94C
I also have a Stevens/Savage Arms 410. Model #94C shotgun. I would like to know when this gun was manufactured. It was a gift from my late grandparents that really means a lot to me. My granmother used it for squirrel hunting. It would be nice to know this info so that I can accurately depict the history whenever I talk about one of my most cherished possessions.
