My Preemie

Sewing patterns for the premature baby.

Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them.

In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.

Sizes are based on the average preemie size.  When in doubt, order the next larger size.  All patterns are full-sized and illustrated. The patterns are easy to use and the clothes are easy to make (a simple diaper shirt takes less than an hour to complete).  Suggested fabrics: For sleepwear use the soft, flame retardant sleepwear flannel that is used to make pajamas, or a soft knit.   For playwear use cotton, cotton blends, sweat shirt material, or fleece.

At 3 pounds                               At 3 years

The precious preemie above is my own. When he was born in 1997, he weighed just one pound five ounces and was only 11 1/2 inches long (the same length as a Barbie doll!).  Today he is a healthy, happy 5 year-old.  He loves to read and has a smile that will melt your heart.

I have been sewing since I was a child, and when my son was born, I looked for patterns to make his clothing myself. Of course I found none that were appropriate. They were too big, or didn't meet the needs of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I made a pattern for my son's very first clothes (a small diaper shirt and a knit cap). The clothes were comfortable, and allowed easy access for NICU staff.

After a parent gets over the initial shock of having a preemie and the immediate crises are over, one of the first things a parent wants to do is dress their baby.  Why dress a preemie? Their skin is sensitive to touch and wearing soft clothing can help make them more comfortable. It also helps parents begin bonding with the baby.  Even before parents can hold their baby, they may be able to dress them in matching booties and a hat.

I continue to make and donate clothing and quilts to the NICU that cared for my son. The proceeds from sales are used to make clothes for needy preemies. Many NICUs are in need of clothing , so if you are making clothes for your preemie, consider making an extra blanket or hat for another one. Newborns in Need accepts donations and Carewear has a list of hospitals on their website that need donations. May the preemie in your life beat the odds. Thank you for visiting our site.
