1966 CHEVELLE SUPER SPORT
Hi, my name is Mike Crown from S.E. Pennsylvania and what you are looking at is my Danube Blue 66 SS Chevelle, the real McCoy with the 138176 Vin Number.  138176 is the serial number  which signifies a 66 Chevelle as being a real SS. Danube Blue paint as denoted by the EE paint code on the Trim Tag, is a somewhat rare color. You don't see many 66's painted this color., it's a dark blue and depending on the light, appears black. Danube Blue was a carry over color from the '65 model year, so few 66 Chevelles got this paint color. The car is painted in a Single Stage Urethane, no clear coat. This car was built at the Fremont, California assembly plant during the 4th week of December 1965. The first owner purchased the car from De Anza Chevrolet in Riverside, CA and took possession on December 29, 1965. I have the full previous owners history of the car, original Owner Protecto Plate, original ( though quite frail ) BROADCAST SHEET and various other original documents/paperwork which support this car's history and factory options. The car has been treated to a full Frame Off Restoration with considerable attention given to factory original details, ie., factory inspection markings, paint dabs, crayon marks, etc etc can be seen throughout the engine bay and undercarriage...though the photos here just don't show how much finite detail is really present.  NOS ( new old stock) parts have been used throughout  the restoration, if NOS could not be obtained, original parts were restored. The engine was also treated to a complete rebuild, using original parts when possible. Unfortunately, the original SMOG  equipment as required by California law at the time, has lost it's way over the years. The M-20 transmission and 12 bolt 3:31 posi. rear have each received full rebuilds as well. The whole intent was to restore the car to the way it was when it left the factory in late 1965.

396/360 hp  version of the Big Block V-8. There were three different engines available for the '66 SS. The standard engine was a 396/325 hp (L-35), while the optional choices were a 396/360 hp (L-34) and for the guy who needed just a little more pedal........there was the real beast, a 396/375 hp ( L-78 )., of which 3099 were ordered in 1966., an option not  available or listed in the original dealer literature  until later in the production year.
The Transmission:

M-20 Muncie 4-speed. There were also three different varities of the 4-speed transmission. The M-20, M-21 ( close ratio ) and the very rare  "Rock Crusher" M-22. So why do I say the M-22 was so rare? Well, anyone could have ordered the M-22, but only about twelve 1966 Chevelle super sports were ever actually ordered with the M-22! These twelve were most likely reserved for 375 hp cars. My last 66 SS, The Mystery Chevelle , ( click on the orange link)..............it was one of them!!

The Interior:

Black Vinyl with the following factory options: Bucket Seats with Center Console, Tilt Steering with two spoke Wood Wheel, Full Dash Gauges and the original 7,000 RPM "Knee-Knocker" tachometer ( mounted right above the driver's right knee area ), Am/Fm Push-Button Radio with rear mounted speaker, and Custom Deluxe Seatbelts with Retractors. These are all part of this car's well optioned factory original interior package.

The car rides on original style Firestone 7.75 x 14" Redline Tires mounted on 1966 date coded 14 x 6 JK Code steel wheels with the factory optional Simulated Mag Wheel Covers.......  The car  also came equipped with factory optional Front and Rear bumper guards. Oh, and lets not forget that high tech safety feature, the Spare Tire Lock!

Thanks for checking out my 66!   e-mail me and let me know what  you think. I also hope you will click on the orange hyperlinks throughout the text to see other photos.
