Who Built America? * (1790- 1861) When answering the question “who built America”, it is first crucial to understand the question at hand. The operative word being “built” can be interpreted in many ways. Although an accepted meaning of “build” is to create or construct, this is not entirely how our class viewed the building of America. We viewed it more as the economic growth during the time leading up to the Civil War (the designated time period for our class’ assignment). Next, it is important to see how everyone during the 19th century contributed to growth and changes in the economy. Different groups, from the underpaid workers in the northern factories to the owners of the factories, played a huge role in the building of America during this time. After extensive reading of the history of this time we concluded that all the people could be classified into four main groups all of which are interdependent. The groups that we decided on are: Entrepreneurs, underpaid workers (such as immigrants and women), inventors, and slaves. With this website we hope to illustrate the connections between each of the groups, as well as stimulate important, thought-provoking questions that will help YOU further understand the economic growth and development during this crucial time in U.S. History.
