Race Report
I don't know what it is about NorCal CX this year, but there seem to be fewer racers. For example, after record numbers in '99 Surf City is down about 20% this year. For VineCX 2000 the draw was equally poor. As an example, the $2 entries for juniors only managed to draw two kids. Our overall attendance was only 60% of last year's total. But that's OK--those who showed up were treated to a great race in a beautiful venue. An intimate competition among friends, if you like. Too bad for the rest of you.The course was a little different than previous editions, as last winter's rains opened up a couple gaping washouts that would easily have eaten a small rider or two. So instead of the epic jungle run we had a piece of singletrack. We also threw in a couple of chicanes to make it less mountain-bikey. Otherwise the course was the same dusty fun suffer-fest as last year. The other new feature was a stiff wind, which fortunately blew uphill on the steep paved climb, but which steadily increased as the day wore on and threatened to blow everyone off the course. The dry air also caused a number of riders to have difficulty breathing. The promised rain did not materialize, oh well.
As I was busy running the event I have not much of an idea of how the races went. You can check the results for that. I can tell you that Ben Jacques-Maynes and Rachel Lloyd successfully defended their '99 titles. Ben's been going to CX school with Justin Robinson and now hops those barriers with ease. Rachel cleaned out almost the entire Master field as well as the women.
Thanks to all of the riders who came out, to the NVV volunteers and referee Casey Kerrigan, and to our great sponsors--Echelon Wines, Steelman Cycles, Sycip, and Sheila Moon Designs. --Dave Carr

Jeff and Larry's eCXcellent adventure
That's not a typo... Jeff and I had an Excellent CycloCross adventure on Saturday. Really quick like:- noon start for the M35, so Jeff and I drive up to the registration table at 12:03pm. This being Jeff's first and my 6th cyclocross race you might think that we would be looking for sympathy, but we've done hundreds of races over the years and we know all too well about arriving late. Can you say "no warm up"? -and- "no course preview"?
- 12:11pm the gun goes off... yes, in 8 short minutes we: parked the car, paid the $16 each in reg., picked up our numbers, Jeff got dressed, took the bikes out/ off the top of the car, put on our shoes/ gloves/ helmets/sunglasses, remembered our water bottles, and charged to the start line only to find out that the oldest cycling trick in the book (don't pin your # and the officials will always take care of you) didn't buy us any time, dang!
- 12:44pm the race is over... 43 minutes of cycling in the dust, through rutted out single track, jumping off and on your bike at speed, picking your bike up over barriers, falling once just when Rachel Lloyd passed me (!). No cars or trips were awarded, so results barely matter.
That was that fun! eeeeeCXcellent! --Lar
...oh, and did I forget to mention that Jeff was riding his 25 pound dual
suspension bike?
