| Primary | ______ | Secondary | ______ | Class | ______ | Vol. No. | ______ | Whole No. | ______ | Page No. |
The first three columns are primarily in words and letters, and the final three are numbers.
1. Primary: the subject being referenced.
2. Secondary: additional information concerning the entry in the primary field.
3. Class: a one or two-letter code describing the primary entry as follows:
A - Author; C - Clockmaker; O - Other; P - Personality; S - Subject;
W - Watchmaker; R - Book Review; X - only slight mention is made.
(NB: The above letters may--and will--occur in many different combinations and orders.
4. Volume Number of the Bulletin--up to 2 numerals.
5. Whole Number, or issue number, of the Bulletin--up to 3 numerals.
6. Page Number--up to 4 numerals.
The final four columns (the locator data) appear as letters and (up to) 4 digit numbers. The letter column indicates the Class (as in 3. above) the next (1 or 2) digits indicate the Volume Number; the next (1 to 3) digits indicate the Whole or Issue Number; the final (1 to 4) digits indicate the Page Number.
Note that only the last two numbers are critical to locating a specific reference--Whole (Issue) No. and Page No. The last two numbers are the only important ones.
An example:
| Primary | Secondary | Class | Vol. No. | Whole No. | Page No. |
| FRANKLIN CLOCK | ENGLISH EXAMPLE OF FRANKLIN CLOCK 'IL 3' | S | 6 | 52 | 109 |
In the above example, 'IL 3' indicates that the article has 3 illustrations.
Should the Index entry look like this:
| ACCOUNT BOOK, TERRY | E TERRY JR RECORD BOOKS NOTED | S | ______ | 906 | 30 |
The printed Master Index notes that in an entry such as
| EQUATION CLOCK_____ | BY BERTHOUD 'IL 1'_____ | SX | R1 | T3 | 34 |
Equally, an entry of '999' in the Whole No. column denotes an advisory to check a specific entry in the Primary column.
