How Do I Accumulate CEUs?
If you're recertifying your credential by continuing education, your
objective is to accumulate 60 continuing education units (CEUs) in five
years. Twenty of these CEUs must be AAMA approved.* The category
breakdown of CEUs must be as follows:
- 15 Administrative
- 15 Clinical
- 15 General
- 15 from any combination of the above three categories
*As of January 1, 2007, the number of CEUs required to be AAMA
approved will change from 20 to 30. The category breakdown will
become 10 Administrative, 10 Clinical, and 10 General.
Recertifying your credential is important and worthwhile. It's also a
relatively straightforward process:
Where to get your CEUs?
- AAMA self-study courses are monographs written by field experts.
Topics range from medical office management to nutritional issues to
health care law and ethics. Each course also includes a test. If you
score 70 percent or higher on the test, the AAMA will add the CEUs to
your transcript.
- CMA Today CEU tests appear in each issue of the magazine,
which is published six times a year. Each test consists of 20
true/false questions based on the corresponding continuing education
article. The number and type(s) of CEUs varies with each test.
- Local chapters and state societies of the AAMA often host CE
workshops, as well.
Check your transcript
It's a good idea to check your transcript periodically. Doing so keeps
you aware of the number and types of CEUs you've accumulated.
Apply for recertification
You must apply 90 days before your current certification expires.
