Pioneer Braid

Pioneer Braid looks like a complicated pattern, but once you know the trick it is very easy.
  1. Cut your fabric into strips. The pattern looks better with wide strips rather than narrow ones, but the marvelous thing about this pattern is that although the strips need to be the same length, they do not have to be the same width.
  2. Sew a square, or the narrow end of one strip to the top edge of another, like this:
  3. Continue sewing strips on alternate sides, matching the top edge of the one side of the new strip with the narrow end of the strip you just sewed on, like this:
  4. Once your row is long enough - and you will have to sew on a little extra because so much is trimmed off in this step - cut off the extra corners and points to make a rectangle, like this:
  5. Continue making rows in this manner, then sew the rows together to complete the project.
