I visited Prashanti Nilayam (Baba's ashram) in December 1996. It was my first visit and I didn't think about asking anyone for tips. When I got there, I was dressed very differently to everyone else. It wasn't really very embarrasing, but I wouldn't want anyone to make the same mistakes as me. So, I have compiled a few tips for a first-timer.

• Most men there wear white kurta pyjamas and women wear white saris. They do not have to be totally white, but then again, don't go overboard with patterns and colour.
• Take a pair of sandals with you. It is not advisable to wear shoes and socks around the ashram because they are not allowed in many areas. It is faster and easier to wear a pair of slip-on sandals.
• Many hotels near the ashram do not allow booking prior to your trip. If you do not intend on staying in the ashram, I would contact a hotel before your trip to see if you can book a room.
• The lines for Darshan start more than an hour before. Some people get there very early and line up. In the meantime they read a book and take advantage of the tranquil atmosphere.
