-- updated March 31, 1996 -- originally published January 7, 1996
When you have the oldest transit system in the country, you're bound to make
a few changes. Jonathan has compiled quite a list of stations and passageways
that aren't usually visited by the public anymore (and a few that are!).

In April of 1975, the MBTA opened the new Haymarket-North extension; which
currently provides Orange Line service north of Boston. Before that, Orange
Line trains ran over an "El" structure that wound its way through Charlestown
and Sullivan Square, to Everett. The route which the "El" used still shows
an occasional "hint" of what may have been there, but these hints do not
show exactly what was there. This is a great opportunity to remember something
that Bostonians haven't seen in over twenty years, or see it for the first
time! Over 100 downloadable images!

The
Watertown Line by Scott Moore, with assistance from George
Chiasson
-- published December 1, 1998
On the day this essay was published, streetcars would run between the Watertown
Carhouse and Park Street station for only another 6 months. At the time,
no one knew that June of 1969 would be the last time an active service trolley
would venture beyond Packard's Corner. This essay documents the line's humble
beginnings, it's life, and "after-life". We also draw conclusions to the
current situation with the MBTA's Arborway Line, who's own future seems less
than bright.

This Old
Bus with Joel Fairhurst and the Everett Shop Crew
A photo essay by Joel Fairhurst, Scott Moore, and Vinton Wong
-- updated March 25, 1997 -- published May 19, 1996
In March 1996, MBTA bus 8887 was involved in a traffic accident. Fortunately
none of the people on the bus were seriously injured, but the bus did not
fare so well. The impact seriously damaged the front end of the bus. But,
leave it to the resourcefulness of the MBTA and their people at the Everett
Shops who have taken on the task of rebuilding the bus. In a similar manner
to the PBS series "This Old House", this photo essay chronicles the rebuilding
efforts of the bus including the repair of major structural members, and
the replacement of the body modules.
Boston's Cancelled
Highways by Scott Moore
-- published August 28, 1996
Over twenty years ago, Boston area residents fought to save their homes
from a highway system that would have ripped through several neighborhoods.
This section will attempt to show some of those neighborhoods, and the impact
that the highways would have had on them.
Arborway
Memories A Photo Essay by Scott Moore
-- published February 5, 1996
The Arborway line always seemed to get the "hand-me-downs" and was the
last Green Line branch to operate PCC cars in regular service. It's been
over ten years since a streetcar has ventured beyond the Heath Street loop,
and the destination is still listed on the system maps, though classified
as "suspended service". If service is ever restored, it won't look anything
like this!
