Review of "Eclipse" from Slambook #3, October 1999

Apoptygma Berzerk "Eclipse"

It's been nearly a year since the last APB studio release (the "Paranoia" single), but Norwegian EBM master Stephan Groth more than makes up for lost time with this latest offering. The opening seconds of the title track "Eclipse" sound somewhat similar to the beginning of "Non-Stop Violence", but then the song rapidly evolves into a propulsive and melodic techno-flavored groove reminiscent of APB side-projects like H2O, while retaining the unmistakeable Apoptygma Berzerk sound.

The single's B-side, "Beatbox", is worthy of being a single in its own right. From the get-go, it's the kind of tune that just gets your head bobbing along with the beat, and the lyrics are pretty catchy too. Rounding out the single are two more mixes of "Eclipse": the "Dimension D" remix, which features an amped-up beat and a more squelchy, percolating acid synth line, and finally a short-and-to-the-point "Radio Mix".

Altogether, it's one of the strongest singles Apoptygma has released to date, and is sure to be a dancefloor favorite in the tradition of the APB classics "Mourn" and "Non-Stop Violence". Definitely worth picking up!
