information sites

American Library Association's Banned Books Week
This section of the ALA website is devoted to providing information regarding censorship and banned or challenged books. It includes: information on the first amendment, an intellectual freedom toolkit, a list of the top 100 most frequently challenged books, quotes regarding book banning and censorship, the ALA Bill of Rights, and much more.

Banned Books Online
Includes an extensive list of banned or censored books, providing a brief explanation of why each work was or is considered controversial. Each title listed is an active link to a chapter or chapters of the actual work, with some works presented in their entirety. Also gives additional information regarding censorship, with links to related cites.

A Brief History of Comic Book Censorship
This page is merely a section of the Weekly Wire online, which is no longer publishing. Although the rest of the site is out-of-date, this page gives an interesting synopsis of the history of comic book censorship from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Beacon For Freedom
Beacon for Freedom of Expression is an international database on censorship of books and newspapers, and literature on freedom of expression, produced by the Norwegian Forum for Freedom of Expression. The site includes: recent news on censorship, data on current and historic censorship, world wide reports and books, as well as publications out of print.

Censored
This site comprise an extensive, organized, and in most cases annotated directory of Internet and print resources on various aspects of censorship and free expression. It contains links and information regarding censorship in general, as well as book banning and censorship in other media formats. Unfortunately some of the links are no longer active, but it is still a good source of information.

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1986 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of First Amendment rights for members of the comics community. This site is a more in-depth look at Comic Book Censorship, with a bibliography from the 1930s to the present and a timeline of the history of comics from 1754 to today. The site also includes case studies, news, information on upcoming conventions, and a place to give donations.

Free Expression Network
The Free Expression Network (FEN) is an alliance of organizations dedicated to protecting the First Amendment right of free expression and the values it represents, and to opposing governmental efforts to suppress constitutionally protected speech. The site includes information on censorship, free speech, current court cases, internet issues, school-related issues, and recent legislation.

National Coalition Against Censorship
This page is an advocacy webpage that focuses on censorship in all types of media, including art, television, radio, textbooks, etc.

9/6 - We have a new NC FOODS product ... they're Smoked Almonds in our small light snack size package for only fifty-one cents. It's our only product with a smoking monkey right on the label.

9/6 Author Madeleine L'Engle passed on.

9/3 - I just learned that my home state of Vermont is the only state that President Bush hasn't visited as president. The state did vote against him in 2000 and 2004, and the state Senate approved a resolution calling for his impeachment earlier this year. "The vast bulk of Vermonters not only don't want to see him in Vermont, they don't want to see him in the White House any longer," said Garrison Nelson, a professor of political science at the University of Vermont. "He's saving the best for last," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., one of his harshest critics in Congress.
I'm very proud. - John

Recycle your EGG CARTONS with us

You can just drop any empty egg cartons at the main counter and we will give them a good home. Thanks ... for being a good egg.

Just-resigned "presidential brain" Karl Rove told reporters that his plans include working on a book. He has already talked to a Washington-based lawyer who has brokered high-powered book deals for everyone from Bill and Hillary Clinton to Alan Greenspan to Jenna Bush. No further details on the book are forthcoming as of yet.

An Associated Press/Ipsos poll, released in late August revealed that 27 percent of the approximately 1,000 U.S. adults polled had not read a book in the past year. However, the study showed that more than half of those who did read a book in the past year had read more than six books, and over a quarter had read more than 15. Some times it seems a very small world.

There are many new buttons from the Zichilton Message Company on the spinner rack located on the main counter. As always, all the buttons aren't for everyone ... that just makes life more interesting. My favorite is Willie Nelson for surgeon general, but there's a whole lotta new there.

We also have a bunch of very funny, non-book stuff from a company called Ruby Q. Some people may not think they're funny (that's the problem with funny) but we like them ... take a look ... I think you'll laugh.

The World of Kristina
There is a new display in our front window. It is done by Kristina, of course, and it's all about music. It's looking good, but don't take my word for it ... come down and look for yourself.

Remember, always keep at least one eye on the window display, because Kristina is a very talented artist and her displays bring something fresh and different to Main Street. If you have a need for: window display, paper art & sculpture, card making, or mixed media artwork, Kristina is the inventive, talented, and clever person for you. If she isn’t in the store, she can be e-mailed at kristina_mcclanahan@yahoo.com Put some of her unique talent in your life.
